Public health statistics reveal that in the first months of 2024, the Dominican Republic’s five border provinces recorded a total of 4,222 births, with a significant majority – 2,728 – attributed to Haitian mothers, according to data from the National Health Service (SNS). Dominican mothers accounted for the remaining 1,494 births.
The region also saw 42 births to girls under the age of 15. Of those, 24 were Haitian and 18 were Dominican. The province of Pedernales reported the highest number of these cases, with 19 total pregnancies.
The provincial breakdown in 2024 was:• Pedernales: 19 births to girls under 15 (10 Haitian, 9 Dominican)• Dajabón: 6 births to girls under 15 (3 Haitian, 3 Dominican)• Independencia: Fewer births to Haitian girls under 15 compared to Dominican girls.• Montecristi, Elías Piña: Higher incidence of births to Haitian mothers.
