Dominican baseball legend, Sammy Sosa, 56, had played his final game with the Cubs at Wrigley on Oct. 2, 2004, when he homered in an 8-6 loss to Atlanta. Twenty-one years later he returned to the stadium to receive a standing ovation by the fans.

Sosa was the fan favorite who thrilled the crowds and brought joy and cheers to so many for around 13 seasons. Nevertheless, eventually the slugger’s diminishing performances led to a falling out with the organization and his previously adoring fans.

CNN reports that Sosa is remembered from when he and Mark McGwire captivated the nation in 1998 as the pair battled to break Roger Maris’ longstanding single-season home run record. Sosa – who won National League MVP honors that year – finished with 66 home runs and McGwire – who hit 70 homers to set the mark at the time.
