Claro Dominicana has attributed widespread disruptions to its fiber optic network on Monday, 7 July 2025 to excavation work being carried out by the Monseñor Nouel Aqueduct and Sewer Corporation (Coraavega).

The telecommunications giant stated that the digging, located along the La Vega–Bonao stretch, was responsible for severing its crucial fiber optic lines.

The damage reportedly led to intermittent service and slowdowns for both mobile and fixed internet users across the country.

Yet, the slowdowns are not new and have been occurring for months, as users report. Far gone are the days of the robustness in telecom service remembered from when Verizon operated in the Dominican Republic. Claro and other service cable lines today fill the skyline, prompting many to wonder what will happen with the service when a major storm passes.
