The lack of political will to crack down on the spreading of gambling in corner stores all over the country is a cancer that is eating at Dominican society, El Informe con Alicia Ortega reports. The number of betting shops has increased to more than 100,000, most illegal. The number of one-armed bandits, with access to children in corner shops, is growing in leaps and bounds.
El Informe con Alicia Ortega presented statements from key government officials, such as Quico Tabar, director of the National Lottery, who says that laws in effect and new bills on the topic are ambiguous. The lack of clear consequences for violations of gambling rules is a way to keep the present situation that generates billions for a privileged few in covert complicity with the government.
