The mofongo is a dish popular in the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. Most people will eat it in a restaurant.
This traditional dish is made primarily with fried green plantains that are mashed with garlic, olive oil, and pork cracklings or bacon, and often formed into a ball or mound. It’s commonly served with a savory broth or alongside meat, seafood, or vegetables.
Now the people of Santiago have set a new culinary record. The Guinness World Record for the largest green plantain ball was achieved on Saturday, 26 July 2025, with the creation of a colossal 560-kilogram (1,234-pound) mofongo, prepared in Santiago de los Caballeros’ central park.
