The United Nations needs to decide the future for the Kenya-led Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti. The mission is set to expire in October. The 800-men mission does not have much to show for itself, nor was it fully deployed. Haitian Times reports: “Despite its presence alongside the Haitian National Police (PNH), the MSS has yet to secure any territory or help arrest a notorious gang leader.”
Now, there is the effort to approve a US-backed plan to shift the force into a UN-funded peacekeeping model. The present model has done little to curb gang violence and control in Haiti.
“Greater clarity is expected in October, when the MSS mandate will either be renewed or adapted under a new model,” Jack Ombaka, the spokesman for the MSS, told The Haitian Times.
