With communities around the country complaining of power outages, the installation of a new power barge off the coast of Azua might be welcomed. That was not the case for the new installation in Puerto Viejo, at Playa Los Negros on the Azua coast. There are now three generating units in that space.

However, locals are complaining that the power stations are a threat to the eco-system and are a source of noise contamination for the surrounding area.

The first power-generating barge went into operation back in 2023. The Ministry of the Environment has cited the facility on one occasion for a fuel spillage. The area has been plagued with power outages for many years, and it is recognized that these power barges, with contracts through 2026, are only a temporary solution.
