President Luis Abinader was in northeastern San Francisco de Macoris on Sunday, 2 November 2025 for the inauguration of the Dr. Ángel María Gatón Regional University Hospital, described as the state-of-the-art medical complex that is now the most complete and advanced regional hospital in the country.

The construction of the hospital generated approximately 5,900 direct jobs, providing a significant boost to the local economy in Duarte province.

The new center, boasting 329 beds (294 for hospitalization and 35 for intensive care) is expected to significantly bolster healthcare services across the entire Northeast region.
