The US Embassy in Santo Domingo reminds travelers that one of the most important steps before traveling abroad is to consider purchasing international medical insurance. The US Department of State strongly urges US citizens and US residents to consult with their medical insurance company prior to departure to confirm whether their policy applies overseas and if it covers emergency expenses such as a medical evacuation.

A note in the US Embassy website reminds Americans that US medical insurance plans seldom cover health costs incurred abroad unless supplemental coverage is purchased. Medicare does not cover medical costs outside the United States. Many travel agents and private companies offer insurance plans that include coverage for medical care overseas, including emergency services and evacuations.
