The Ministry of Education and the Dominican Journalists Guild (CDP) announced on 6 April 2026 that Aníbal de Castro had been selected as the winner of the 2026 National Journalism Award. The jury, which evaluated 36 candidates, cited his 50-year career marked by ethical rigor and a “critical, analytical” approach to communication.
De Castro began his professional journey in the 1960s at El Nacional under the direction of Freddy Gatón Arce. He later moved to the evening paper Ultima Hora, where he served as editor-in-chief and director between 1981 and 1992. In 1994, he founded the investigative magazine Rumbo and later, in 2002, he established Diario Libre, the first free daily newspaper in the Dominican Republic.
