Aníbal Díaz Belliard, the director general of operations for the Presidency, personally supervised the commencement of demolition work on the bridge spanning the Camú River. The infrastructure suffered severe structural failure following a recent and significant rise in the river’s water level along the strategic Touristic Highway (Carretera Turística).

The primary objectives are to restore road connectivity and ensure the safety of citizens traveling to key tourist destinations and rural communities. The road is an alternate route from Puerto Plata to Santiago.

The bridge collapsed under the pressure of recent intense rainfall that caused the river to swell beyond its capacity, forcing authorities to preemptively close the area to traffic to prevent accidents and protect lives.
