Just 112 days into 2026, and there have been 651 traffic fatalities. According to the Permanent Road Safety Watch of the National Institute of Transportation and Movement, in 2025 there were 2,205 traffic fatalities.

The legacy print media of the Dominican Republic does not report all of these tragic events. For example, according to the report in the Listin Diario, there were just 10 fatalities reported between February and April. And this included an accident on Tuesday, 21 April 2026 on the highway to San Cristobal (6 of November) that took three lives.

In addition, there were two accidents involving buses, that did not result in deaths, but certainly served as a cautionary tale.
