International media report that the United States government deported over 160 Haitian nationals to Cap-Haïtien International Airport (CAP) in northern Haiti.

The flight landed in Cap-Haïtien rather than the nation’s primary hub, Toussaint Louverture International Airport in Port-au-Prince, due to severe security risks and gang violence controlling large areas around the capital.

According to reporting from CBS News and the Miami Herald, this was the first major deportation flight following legal decisions regarding Temporary Protected Status (TPS) protections for Haitian nationals.

The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) charter flight originated out of Alexandria, Louisiana, making a stop in Miami before proceeding to Cap-Haïtien.
