The nation’s public school system is starting today, but the Association of Dominican Professors (ADP) is calling for the government to pay them promised incentive bonuses and address infrastructure and other of the usual start of school issues.

President Luis Abinader will lead the official opening ceremony for the 2026-2027 academic year on Monday, 24 August 2026 at the Espejo La Milagrosa Basic School in Santo Domingo Este. The Ministry of Education has announced that the national enrollment for this school year stands at 2,612,882 students registered at 10,648 educational centers nationwide. This breaks down to 2,031,289 students in the public sector and 581,593 in the private sector. The Ministry says 1,200 new classrooms have been added to the public system.
