After the Danilo Medina administration signed diplomatic relations with China in 2019, Chinese imports have consistently been on the rise and the megastores with low cost goods have opened all around the country, most following the same commercial and infrastructure model. For years, competing businesses in the Dominican Republic have denounced unfair competition. The traditional business complain that the Chinese have received import benefits authorized by the Customs Agency and labor and tax law violations, with the indifference of the authorities. The government has closed several of the establishments for constructions that put employees and customers at risk.
