A minor magnitude 4.0 earthquake was recorded off the southeastern coast of the Dominican Republic near the resort town of Bayahíbe early Wednesday morning, 26 August 2026. According to seismic data, the earthquake struck at approximately 5:42am. The epicenter was pinpointed roughly eight kilometers off the coast of Bayahibe (approximately 23 kilometers south of Higüey city), occurring at an estimated depth of 128 kilometers. There were no damages reported and the deep down shake was barely felt.

The National Seismological Institute (UASD) logs hundreds of minor events annually along the North American-Caribbean plate boundary, but magnitude 4.0-4.9 events typically occur only a few times per year across the island and rarely result in structural damage.
