The expansion of Chinese retail in the Dominican Republic has entered a transformative phase, shifting from modest storefronts in Santo Domingo’s urban corridors to massive “megastores” spanning provinces across the Cibao, East, South, and Northwest regions, Diario Libre reports.

These retail hubs operate on a sprawling scale: San Francisco de Macorís now hosts the Macorisano Gran Mall at 23,000 square meters, more than double the size of the Julián Javier baseball stadium, while La Vega’s El Exitazo spans nearly 16,000 square meters. By capitalizing on cheaper rural land, less saturated local markets, and robust national road and port infrastructure, these investments cater to provincial consumers who previously had to travel to the capital for variety.
