Some people love sharing what's not theirs, so your rice took off with someone who knows you keep more than a subsistance level of it at your home.

Some Dominicans don't understand "saving some for tomorrow" and "it's not yours to give away". If you purchase anything in bulk it's for everybody, like it or not.

say what you will, but in my experience, and that of many of my friends, your health improves in the DR. i used to suffer from debilitating hypertension in the USA. doctors tried to control it, but could not. i came to the DR, and a doctor at Bournigal had my pressure down to teenager level in 2 weeks. he told me that it was not the medication, but the environment. he warned me i would not be long for the world if i stayed in the USA. so, with my very decent blood pressure level, i went back to work the following Monday, and on Thursday i collapsed at my desk. EMS came and took me away in an ambulance. my pressure was through the roof. i went into the office on Monday and resigned, and headed back to the DR. my pressure is just fine.

Im glad you re doing great. The same thing happens to many family and friends when they go to DR. There heakth gets better. Ni pain in the bones, etc etc. But when they return to NY, they return back to their painful state. Lol.

A E,
Could you tell us how you "ship it down " ?? details, or point to a thread which explains this process..
I have heard of this " filling a 55 gal size drum" and sending it down.. would be interested in knowing more details on it though .. I am guessing it is not FLOWN down , cuz that would cost way more than some 50 lb bag of flour ans some olive oil is worth..
im in NJ by the way
thanks

search 'mudanzas'.... lots of informtion

btw, it's not all bad not having food in the house. I've dropped weight.

That is quite a "cup half full" attitude, very commendable.

If you find that the things you have purchased continue to disappear, WHICH INDEED THEY MAY, you may have a change of heart regarding this quaint cultural quirk.

thank you, Rafael. when i used to go back and forth on a regular basis, i always felt different the minute i got through the terminal in NYC. i felt like there was a load on my shoulder. as soon as i got back to the DR, my entire body felt different within two days.

Maybe put a NOTE on it in spanish .
"Hey, if you HUNGRY and need some extra Rice, all you got to do is ASK me, but please leave some for the next hungry person "..
Not sure how to say it in Spanish though . but they would get the message.

"si tienen hambre y necesitan un poco de arroz adicional, s?lo me preguntan, pero por favor dejen un poco para la pr?xima persona hambriente"

I personally don't think it will make any difference whatsoever. I have found that lots of lower-class Dominicans are also functionally illiterate, so they might not be able to read it. Either way, I don't think it will work.

Gringo, what is it about your living arrangement that prevents you from simply asking people directly what happened to your rice? It is one thing to take a portion to eat and who cares? But 10 pounds means someone is taking advantage. I would be polite and direct.

We ship down a lot of boxes, 55 gallon plastic drums, etc. every year. With each box/drum shipped, you can send [for FREE] a big bag of rice or flour AND a big container of oil, outside the box [free free free]. We go to Sam's Club and buy their huge bags of rice and bread flour, and they sell 2.5 gallon jugs of oil too.

We use Embarque Bella Vista out of the Bronx [they pick up all over NJ], but I think all the mundanzas have the free rice/flour/oil deal.

I think he DID ask but no information was forthcoming.

by what you wrote i gather that you hooked up with a woman from a poor background and you are likely maintaining a chunk of her family too. while i would not want to pass any judgement on that choice i must warn you that usually,

It's all good. No worries.

Gringo Rubio your musings are welcome here. I hope to here more. May I ask, you mentioned a few years for kids to get done with school yet young ones eating the rice. Do you have to sets of kids? That's a lot of rice. Good luck bother. Keep us posted.

My kids (3 girls) live in Minneapolis. They one by one left from Florida to the north country where I chose not to follow. I turn blue from November to late in May as I just can't seem to stay warm. I enjoy tropical climes. I'm not much into the people up there either. Nice, but... I'll go with cold.

The 7 year old I mentioned is my girlfriend's son.

Oh, I can and did ask. I've learned not to expect a response; well, not always. It's one of those quirks of Dominican culture that I haven't quite wrapped my head around yet.

Maybe, it's because people blow up (emotionally) on the smallest slight. It's like a violent thunderstorm with lots of thunder and lighting that rolls over and 10 minutes later the sun comes out and birds start chirping. Nobody wants to be the trigger.

Rice, no big deal.... I can afford 10#'s a week for my little social experiments....

I am sure the rice was shared with people in the barrio that were in need. I lived in a poor barrio in Colombia for awhile and was observant of sharing with people of need with not just food,I was tired of my baby mama buying diapers one at at time at the local tienda and paying triple what I would pay in bulk so I went to the local big box store and bought a large package of pampers and they were gone in no time because the family was handing them out to every mother on the street.

First, you as.sume, wrongly, they will eat rice once a day. Stop right there !! They dont?
Lunch and dinner , for sure.
If you are lucky they eat platano or guineo for breakfeast.....
If u arent lucky they eat.......rice.

Secondly, if u are like me, u eat 1lb of rice, roll over fall asleep and maybe, maybe wake up the next morning.
Dominicans, no, they will eat 1lb, at the least, and go out partying and dancing all night.

So 3 people ? 2 meals ? 0.5lb per meal per person ? 7 days = 15.75....... so they STILL had to go on colmado runs :)

Do them a favour and buy a 20lb bag next time ;) ;) ;)

Small story.
Yesterday, BIL, who is dying of asuca, he is allready blind as a bat and a sobrina who has a liver full of fat ( recent hospital tests ) at the advanced age of 25, were cooking there special dieta meal.
BIL says to sobrina to prepare rice and sardinas. Yes obviously its hard to cook when u are blind. pone una libra y media he says....
I say W.T.F ?? Who else is eating....
Nobody.
I shake my head ( and then realise he cant see me doing it :) ), so i add co?o es demasiado !!
So he rea.sses and says to only cook una libra.....
