.....I do expect Dominican drivers use other people's ID / drivers license / certificate of good conduct / license plate and car make / year to enroll and then use their beaten Toyota Corolla of '95. If that happens it damages the whole idea and uber will become just an additional source of customers for the can driver. But when enough people with decent cars and enough time on their hands join it would work............

That driver wouldn't last long. Uber has a very strict rating system. If a driver's rating drops below a 4.6 out of 5.0 Uber will drop them in a heartbeat.

Smart of Hyundai to sell a car with a factory installed propane system.

Honda has been building/selling a dual fueled cng/gasoline vehicle for years.

Ford has had dual fuel trucks since 2009.

Slowly, manufacturers are building more dual fuel vehicles (propane/gasoline, gasoline/electric ....but, will they catch on enough to continue to warrant the extra cost and infrastructure necessary to accomodate them?

All likely to be determined by the price of oil and the speed of innovation.

Toyota has even begun selling its stand alone hydrogen fuel cell vehicle the Mirai.

As to Uber.....they are likely (quietly) beta testing in the DR.

Beta testing as in making rides? I don't think so. The app is working, you can sign up with a Dominican cc and you can submit Dominican documents to enroll, but there are no drivers yet.

As I have been informed, the modus operandi of Uber is to do closed loop beta testing internally....before rolling out to the general public.

1st,
in case of the Punta Cana Area,
not even a single AI resort has any shuttles running, where do you get such info from??
2nd,
how many AI Tourists are in Santo Domingo City to use Uber?
don't mistake Boca Chica and Juan Dolio etc etc with Santo Domingo City, where they plan to start.

Mike

Mike, I was speaking in generalities with AI tourists and should have used the word "elsewhere". My point is that I believe AI tourists would like to use something familiar like Uber in Punta Cana because there is not the ease of a shuttle. Not a major point, but wanted to give you the respect of an explanation since you addressed it.

yeah,
but in the AI Resort areas, like for example here in punta cana,
exactly those guests have cabbies readily available 24/7 and mostly without even the need to call, because they are available at hotellobbies and the Tourist Area hotspots all aroud the clock.
and in case to pick up a guest at a hotel, Uber would need to negociate a deal with each single Resort separately and bring a list of their vehicles including the Tourism transfer/Taxi Stickers, to be allowed on the premises.
here i see the point where the Transfer Union in case of Punta Cana would step in, if they plan such in this particular area.
every vehicle, to transport Tourists, needs a specific registration as such transfer vehicle, and to date it is not possible to register a single car, you need a small fleet of several cars to apply for a touristy transfer service license.
not something each single Uber registered driver could do for himself, he would need to be a company and show the minum number of required vehicles, which btw need to be registered in their matriicula in the particular company's name.
i would be happy if something like Uber would join in here,
as that would mean each single car can be used for such Transfers, so i could transfer my own customers in our own vehicles, without the very costy needs for yearly tourism transfer renovations and registering every new car again and agin.
i don't see such happen,
the government, with the Tourism Ministry as the head of those registrations, would need to completely take down their existing licensing system for transportations in the tourist sector, and bring up something new where a system like Uber with it's private drivers would fit in.

For those that never used Uber. The customer has an account on a Smartphone. He has to have data or internet access to even hail a car. Then the driver goes to the site of your phone by GPS.

AND the best part you don't need to worry if the driver has change as the fare is billed to your account. Got to love it...............

i never feared anywhere on the globe that a driver would have change for my $3.- cabby fare.
what ya guys are talking about??
to get robbed over 3 bucks?
to get a "more reliable"driver for the usual 5-10 blocks cabby ride in the capital??
i would love to see Uber to succeed here in Bavaro/Punta Cana on the east shores.
at the moment they are accepted here i can transfer my customers without any legal tourism papers to the Marina, no more tourism paper renovations/permit fees, no more toursm insurances and car check ups, just a old 2006 beat up truck and a uber account and i can ride my customers myself with a small fee to Uber.
sounds perfect to me, honestly,
but it will never happen is what i see on the case,
as the long running ole fashioned union shyt is too strong for that.
a politician will sure not have the powers to change the union rules here.
i would love to see that change, after 2 decades of stones throwing on moving cars and even a few shoot-outs on public roads, but i don't believe in such miracles.

It's not 3 bucks. It's that you pay with 500 and they don't have change. Anyway, if I don't have smaller I usually ask for a cab with change. If he doesn't have it at my arrival than it's his problem not mine.

don't know about you, i know it's not on myself of any such "kick in".
but people praise Uber about it's safety, not to get robbed for money because it's paid by credit card etc etc.
the crappiest reasons to name for a low price service like a Santo Domingo Taxi Service.

Wonder if that's going to work here. I'm sure the association of taxistas will be very happy to get some competition of anyone with a car and a smartphone.

Or maybe it's the companies like Apolo that will suffer.

Uber is the future of the transportation business. Conventional cab businesses will be defunct in 10 or so years.
Despite what you may hear (competitive propaganda), my experience with Uber has been very positive.
