It’s just a bad business idea, I am shocked he did that.
Menus should be redone imo.
Automatically I thought they are looking for tourists I’m outta here.

All they'd have to do is do a menu in EXCEL with formulas where you change the exchange rate and all the prices are immediately changed.

They can either print them again each time they change, or have a screen with the prices where everyone can see them, just like the fast food places have.

Easy peasy.

The peso has been around 49.5 to one US dollar for many months now...at least 6. Nobody in Sosua has a menu with US pricing as all restaurants buy in pesos, so getting US dollars is only taking advantage of the customer. Huge mistake on Frank's part. It will really turn local expats away and there are not enough tourists to spread amongst the 10 plus bar/restaurants that show sports. All the best to him, he has a lot of competition, not to mention the biggest one right on the corner.

He is currently accepting pesos at a 50 to 1 rate because it will probably reach that rate very soon. So anyone who pays in pesos is actually coming out slightly ahead right now. He has no desire to take advantage of his customers on the peso-to-dollar rate. He is going to take pesos at or near the current rate. As frank12 says his menu is in dollars so he doesn't have to constantly reprint his menus.

It's all about perception. The only bar that I've been to in this country that has its menu is US dollars is Kahunas and I thought it was the most stupid thing.....as do most other people. I have never seem US pricing in Santo Domingo. We are in the DR not the USA.
That's one of the main reasons I don't give Kahuna my valuable custom!

Most of the island have pesos on their menus. They are not changed on a daily or weekly basis. When I see prices in US dollars, I'm not jumping to go to that place. I am in DR, not the US. Show me the price in pesos.

When I buy a hamburger I am now used to seeing the price in pesos. I compare prices in pesos and I use pesos exclusively everyday. When I first arrived in this country, I drove myself nuts converting everything, from CDN to US to RD and vice versa as I learned what was reasonably priced and what wasn't.

I no longer feel compelled to do this and I don't want to start again. Sure, no biggie for 1 burger or one beer/drink. Add food, several beers and several other drinks and one will feel compelled to multiply by 49 (at least OCD me will) to check the amount on the bill. Sorry, just not interested in adding another complication to daily life.

Not suggesting anyone is going to be taken advantage of. If you accept the bill at face value and don't check the conversion math, you'll not know and for some that may be an annoyance not required at other establishments. Is it not enough that you have to keep your own tally without complicating it?

If an establishment needs to rejig their menu pricing every 48 hours because of a slight drop in peso value that speaks to a whole other kettle of fish. I liked the blackboard idea. This menu/peso justification smells fishy to me. At least using the euro would be in keeping with the Irish theme...

It's just a weird decision by the owner and that stands out as being weird. No real problem being weird in this town.

The menus are checklist throwaway menus. You use a pen to check the items that you want on the menu and give it to the waitress. The waitress brings you your order in a to-go bag. You can either eat it there or take it with you. He's doing this because he has a counter right on the sidewalk where you can order food without even coming into the restaurant. He's doing it this way because he expects a lot of to-go business. That's why the menus are in the dollars. You use them once and throw them away.

Reprinting the menu has nothing to do with anything. All stock is paid in pesos not American dollars. If suppliers raise their prices he has to reprint menus either way. The price of chicken fluctuates almost weekly by a few pesos. One week you win and the other week you lose. Nobody is reprinting menus constantly or even yearly.

It is really just some grumpy people looking for an argument over nothing.

Big Frank will get a lot of repeat business from people who remember him from his Jose O'Shay days. I've talked to a lot of people who are absolutely thrilled to see him in Sosua. They're not going to care whether the menu is in dollars or pesos. People don't go to Big Frank's place for the menu. They go there because he makes them feel at home. He'll get enough repeat business where he won't have to worry about pleasing a bunch of old grumpy people who are worried about having to do dollar-to-peso conversions. He'll do just fine without them.

5 dollars for a hot dog is a good price? I got a bridge I want to sell you.

There’s a guy right outside with a small hotdog stand (on the stairs between Finn McCools and the liquor store). It’s only open at night and his “Dominican style” hot dogs are only 50 pesos. He’s been there for years and seems to do a decent amount of business. I’ve stopped there multiple times after a “night on the town” and you don’t even have to get out of the car. Just roll down the car window, stick your hand out with a 100 peso note and say “Dame dos para llevar por favor”. One of the genuinely “fast food” places I’ve come across as he usually has them all ready to go wrapped in foil (he does high volume. Good turnover).

Yes, Cachi has been there for over 20 years. His hot dogs are a meal with all the trimmings. 50 Pesos, boom. My kids call him Senor Hot Dog. A must visit for us.

Frank Sent Me This

This is an image of an actual check. You can see that nothing is added, and is calculated at the correct rate. You can pay in any currency that you want.

Let me know if the link works. First time I tried this.

That looks perfectly fine, so business as usual - remember how many drinks you ordered and you're fine. I had envisioned hand written bills computed using an old battered abacus.

You guys need to step away from the keyboards. This thread instantly got hijacked by a USD to Peso debate that will go on for thirty pages.......

I visited the new place on Sunday and the bill was in pesos, I paid in pesos, received proper change in pesos and TIPPED in pesos (20% to make up for you cheap wads). The place is great, the location is great and the veteran staff.. well lets just say I'll be in there every Sunday when I'm not off island working - GO FINS>

I can guarantee that you will get more drinks than you will pay for. I know Frank well.

There is some signs of real insanity going on here...people getting all hung up on a menu in dollars? Really? Is that the litmus test for not visiting a bar/restaurant?

Does anyone here ever go to the upscale restaurants in Santo Domingo? A lot of places have menu's in dollars. These are Dominican owned restaurants.

It's such a benign thing to get all hung up on.

Two of the people responding here i know very well. They're good people, but they're on very tight budgets. I get that. If you're on a tight budget, I understand it...everyone is on a budget to some degree. But to get so hung up...almost compulsive over a menu in dollars; Really?

Some people living on the North Coast do not blink an eye drinking Grey Goose at $12 a shot. Others here almost have a coronary if they do not get their beer for $2 dollars ($100 pesos) at Happy Hour. But ass soon as Happy Hour is over, they split!

People are different animals, with different tastes, and different depths of pocketbooks. To get all hung up on a menu in US currency is just weird.

PS. I do not work for Big Frank. I do not represent him in my opinions. I know him well. I've known as good as i know my own father. The man is generous beyond belief. He's not out to rip anyone off. But i will say this, I remember very vividly people coming to his St. Patrick's Day party and Superbowl party and buying their drinks across the street in order to save .50 pesos. .50 pesos!

Here is a man dropping $4,000 dollars on a party and flying the entertainers & dancers down from Philadelphia, and people went on Facebook (some of the women had husbands working as managers at Barrick Gold Mine! Making big money!) and bragged about getting their beers from other places to save .50 pesos. >50 pesos!

This is insane.

I'm sorry, some levels of cheapness is nothing to brag about. And yet, people do it. If i don't have money, i don't go out. Period. I certainly do not go to someone's party, and then go onto FB and brag about saving .50 on a beer while enjoying the free entertainment paid by someone else.

Some people need a reality check.

Long gone are the days when dr1 was actually a helpful message board for tourists and new expats........ long gone

Now SKY, I know Frank pretty well and I like him a lot. I sat at his table at Jose O'Shays many times. I'm not complaining but Frank has never bought me a single stinking drink. Never!

Well, Lindsey, it would be disingenuous to say he buys drinks for every single person who walks into his bar or sits with him. but if you are a regular, and you shoot the sh1t with him enough, he will buy you a drink. He loves conversation, and he loves stories.
