President Luis Abinader revealed the government is contemplating the construction of a monorail transportation system in Santo Domingo and Santiago. The plan is to remove thousands of vehicles that serve as multi-fare paying taxis (conchos). These would be removed and scrapped. The plan was shared with the media directors that met with President on Wednesday, 26 August during a lunch at the Presidential Palace. Abinader said the monorail costs less than the subway and is faster to install. He said the project would be carried out using the new Public-Private Partnership Law, N Digital reports.

A monorail costs less than a subway.

Just imagine a subway between Santiago and Santo Domingo.
Not practical. A monorail running within those cities certainly is.
Sounds like he's ready to take the syndicos head on. That's fine but
what about the cargo transportation mafias?

I just thought it was humorous to even suggest a subway for that distance

As for the transport mafias, that will be interesting.

I don't read it that the monorail is between Santo Domingo and Santiago. Sounds to me like two systems, one for each city.
Yes. Now that I read it again, I do see it that way as well. Makes far more sense in the context for a monorail versus subway.

Not trying to go off-topic but while living in Thailand
I used their (BTS) monorail/ sky train system
every time I visited Bangkok. Super clean, cheap,
fast and very efficient especially during rush hour.
I would love to have the same option where I live
in Santiago.

A train between S.D. and Santiago has been discussed in the past. I would rather a train line that could handle freight as well as passengers. The truck traffic between the cities has gotten ridiculous and of course the maintenance and tires are suspect on most of the fleet on the road, not to mention the lack of driver safety demonstrated by the drivers Truck traffic Santiago to Puerto Plata on the main, newly finished highway is also crazy lately. I wish they would finish the Touristica road over the mountain. I assume the 25% or so still not completed is the amount the past admin pocketed.

A new much faster road route is "already" supposed to be in the works again between POP and Santiago.

I heard about that but the fact is I really enjoy the mountain touristica road. I never get tired of the great vistas but damn when you are off the new part it really sucks, even in an SUV.

I took that road once. No need to repeat that experience.

There is no way they can afford that. Monorails are expensive since they're not used much around the world.

Monorails are expensive only when they are constructed at ground level, or below ground. Not above ground.
Above ground, monorails are a more affordable option than normal trains.
When putting into consideration the limited space, and mass populations of Santo Domingo and Santiago, the above ground monorail is the most logical, and fiscally responsible option for modernized public transportation.

100% agreed.
Metro runs a monorail north of Cristo Rey to Villa Mella. Used it many times without any problem.

Here's a great article that explains why monorails suck in urban environments:
