Well after today I can say once we board the plane out of here we will never ever return.
Being illegally detained and have no clue what's being said because I don't speak the language too good and my kids sitting in the taxi for hours crying made up our minds.
Remember do not trust anyone. Learn the language quickly and there are Dominicans that have ties to the police and judges to pay them off.
Even though I had all the proof that the accusor was lying. It was either 20 000 pesos or prison for 4 days. I said in broken spanish I have 4 kids out side and judge said not my problem. All the while the accusor laughing with the police and judge. Giving a few police hugs and watched the accusor hand the police money. Asked to phone someone denied. I was driven to another police department and my kids left at the first for a few more hours and then escorted to a bank machine to take the money out. Then back to other police station sign I have no clue what ince I gave the 20 000 pesos.
TRUST NO ONE.....
Update
No car accident. The owner of the house I was renting said I never paid rent. Which I did and had proof of all. Google translate doesn't work when you have 4 police, the owner and the judge all speaking. The denied me to call anyone

Wow, what were you being accused of? Your post is
😟
concerning but doesn't make much sense unless we know what you "supposedly" did.

The best decision my husband and I made was leaving the Dominican Republic. It's a country filled with people who are disrespectful, no respect for the law, possessions, or others, and the amount of corruption in the country is disgusting. My husband is Dominican and could not wait to leave there. All of his family have left the Dominican Republic and would not ever touch a foot in that country again. We spent 9 and a 1/2 years there, and it was the most miserable 9 and a half years of our lives. All those who claim to love it, are living in their own little touristy bubble in Puerto Plata, Sosua, and Punta Cana. They live in their little vacation mode and don't have to deal with the real everyday stuff. They could offer us a mansion and 20 million dollars, and we still would never step foot back in that place. I have no idea why anyone in there, right mind would want to visit there when there are much nicer and more settled countries. Until the people change, the country will never change and I don't ever see it changing.
People want to complain about the United States but at least there is some sort of law and order and respect and rights for citizens.
I advise you to run and NEVER go back. I know many people who have spent time there and have since left and would never go back.

Being a US born citizen of DR descent, have been privileged to visit DR both as a tourist and as a local, so I feel that each person's experience has the identity to fit your needs. Since most of my stays at POP.are 3-4 months long, the budget is usually about $300-500US per month while not paying for shelter at a private house, but still having to buy beers almost everyday and gas money for the SUV. Girlfriends come and go, just as long as you able to stay within your budget and not let your friends manage your money which DR friends love to do. There are days that I go pick mangos and avocados at my friend's farm, while other times just go to a river or Sosua Beach with my cooler ready, food, and friends. Other days it's just the "motoconchos" seeing my by the malecon or the gas station bar, and asking me if I need a ride back home since they know where I live by the Coca Cola. Women love you the night you have money, friends love you the night you have money, so don't go around broke or without any money to give away then they will call you a cheap "Gringo". Besides that, the DR is a beautiful place, no stress, free sex and no problems !!!! LOL !!!

That's really sad that something like that would happen. I could possibly be in a similar situation given I ever get receipts for rent. Nonetheless, I´m surprised she lasted 9 1/2 years. If you're that miserable, GTFO!

I rail against the unreliable electric and the ****** drivers here but it's not enough to make me even consider going back to the USA. Way too much good **** to offset the bad.

I wonder if she will have to pay overstay fees at the airport. Not sure what her situation is regarding that, but it might help being logally in the country (no entering as a tourist abd overstaying the tourist visa limit) and better yet have Dominican citizenship could be beneficial.

We probably will never hear the "other side" of the story. And yes: The DR is not for everyone !
I see all the time a lot of foreigners coming with great plans and fantasies about their sucess in the DR,
Most of them don't make it.

Try not to deal with Dominicans on any business transaction that takes more than the same day.
There are enough foreign mechanics, landlords, electricians and maybe even plumbers that you should be able to avoid them.
Cheating the gringo is a national pastime

Yes indeed, lol, nothing in life is perfect.
I love living down here. It's a lot like the two cities I grew up in back in the states. Jacksonville, FL and New Orleans, LA but minus the English.
It's safer, cheaper and easier to move around, plus the beaches are nicer.

The biggest problem people who come from up north seem to have is behaving like an American, Canadian, European when they get caught up in an uncomfortable/ unfortunate situation.

If you can learn how to put your "right way" of dealing with sh*t aside and learn to handle the problem like a Dominican would handle it, life down here is easy.

Strange it took someone 9 1/2 years to decide the DR was not for them. How can someone be miserable for 9 1/2 years in a place they chose to live. When you move to another country you need to be realistic, know that it will not be the same as where you came from. I think some move here to the DR without doing "their homework". IMO there is also another side to this story.

Having lived in a half a dozen different countries on three different continents over the last 20 years. Takes 2 years max (in my opinion) to decide whether or not it was a good idea or it's time to move on.

When all the players in court were laughing at the same time, maybe she was threatening to post her displeasure on Facebook.

My theory is the thing that will get you in the most trouble here is standing up for your principles. Don't waste your time.

Actually i disagree. Most of the locals are extremly "Chicken" and standing my ground served me very well until now. If you don't stand up for your rights, ideas or principles, who will ???
