Downloaded the Magic Jack app to my iPhone yesterday. Seems to work great. Call clarity is good and I'm able to receive SMS messages. $4.99/mo with a Miami area code. No Magic Jack USB device needed. If you want to use MJ on your laptop, you'll need to buy the device from Amazon.

Looking for a solution to place calls to EU, you can do that with this app? Just accessed Skype a couple of days ago as had to call to Belgium to troubleshoot something, only to realize that I had zero credits in Skype and you cannot purchase new credits anymore...

TextNow gives you a US number, right? I checked their website briefly.

Yes a US nr and SMS service. And you can have a SIM card you activate and pay as you need for ride share in the US for instance.

For UK numbers and calling etc., I'm looking at Voipfone, £3 per month for porting UK Skype number to them...

But I read for porting numbers they need Skype invoice with name and address on it - I don't have that, so probably not port the number anyway...

With a non local number and their own 056 number they offer £1.5 with ability to call to various countries landline/mobile..., I may give them a try if payment can be via PayPal or transfer - best not to give these companies cc, then hard to stop them auto charging...!

Best to get Teams installed, so have access to all history..., my Skype app on Android stopped opening since yesterday, I was hoping it works for accessing history, but it didn't.

From Jan 2026 it says they delete all historic Skype data if not migrated to Teams.

There is an Export data option can use to save the data, I have requested that, see what that looks like... 🤔 (even though I installed Teams).

I had to use the former Skype yesterday. The switch to whatever Zuckerberg calls it was completely painless.

Skype going dark feels like the end of an era, but also, not that surprising. It’s been running on nostalgia fumes for a while. Magic Jack, TextNow, Talk360... everyone’s just duct-taping together their own replacement at this point. Might as well hold a funeral and move on.

I switch to MagicJack. Works well.
Been using MJ about 17 years here. You may not know it, but with the app once it works you do not even have to have your computer or router on for it to work anywhere in the World with Wifi or Data on.............
