President Luis Abinader met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Wednesday, 30 April 2025 at the Presidential Palace, a confirmation of the long-standing diplomatic relations between the Dominican Republic and Russia. Lavrov had arrived at 10pm on Tuesday. The meeting coincided with the 80th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two nations.

The one-on-one meeting with President Abinader lasted approximately 35 minutes and focused on the historical context of Dominican-Russian relations and opportunities to strengthen economic, cultural, and political collaboration. Abinader emphasized the importance of building on the 80-year legacy of diplomatic engagement, while Lavrov underscored Moscow’s commitment to expanding its presence in the Caribbean region...

All of that and more mi amigo! If Russia is to continue its aggression, it has to make new links, and strengthen old links to ensure it has trade options to get around sanctions. That’s why it is a member of BRIC. An alliance specifically designed to support each other through economic ties to ciccumvent Western and EU sanctions. Russia reinforcing cultural and economical ties with the DR, renewing its economic and tourism links with Cuba, and aligning itself with Brazil is just smart politics.

Anything that puts them closer to the US geographically is both a military and economic advantage. The US is still importing materials from Russia despite the sanctions and Russia is also rebuilding old bases and building new ones in it‘s Arctic territories, right on the US and Canada’s doorsteps. Another strategic move to give them a military advantage North and South of the North American landmass.

Both Russia and China pursue forms of hegemony. China economically, Russia militarily. The DR is already in bed with China. President Abinader appears to think the DR bed is big enough for Russia too which reminds me of the old political adage,” Politics makes for strange bedfellows”.

I’m sure it was but Lavrov is as slippery as an eel in a barrel of snot! The DR President is way out of his depth with this dude. Doesn't matter. Anything for more tourists to spur the further development of DR AI resorts.
