Last year about this time in Sosua I bought a cell phone from a guy off the street for $RD500. The phone was new, charged, activated and had 100 pesos worth of minutes. I will be returning to the north coast in a couple of weeks and would like to know where in Puerto Plata I can make a similar purchase. I was very pleased with my previous purchase, but was later informed that I had overpaid and that the going rate is more like $RD300. Please also advise on the price I should pay.

500 pesos is not overpaid at all, usually cellphones are over 3000 pesos

You have Alcatels available now for 400 pesos both Claro and Orange...

It seems last year you had a good deal, so you should have a good one again this year

yea man, I paid 675 for my phone and it was some lower level Alcatel model. 500 sounds good, if anything go to a company store vs. a street merchant but with that guy at least I bet you didnt pay tax on it(26%)
