Debra,

Yes, I've heard of it. I lived just blocks from it for four years (until 11/99), and my family would stay there when visiting from the US. It's located in a quiet neighborhod in Santo Domingo known as Los Cacicazgos, along the Mirador del Sur park. [Although, due to the construction of may high-rises along Av. Anacaonda in recent years, most rooms at the Fiesta no longer even have an unobstructed view of the park!] A decent hotel in terms of accomodations; nothing extraordinary. When my parents stayed there the staff was not very responsive (we had to call 3 times to get towels for the room -- the maid not left any. Also, the TV needed to be fixed and that took nearly 24 hrs). The hotels is used alot by non-US airline crews, and seems to be THE place for holding conventions and trade shows. [Not certain why on either count.] It's a bit far from the Colonial Zone and the Malecon (ocean boulevard), although those can be reached without difficulty by taxi.

Hope this helps.

This is accurate! You might want to try

any of the other smaller hotels if price is an issue-Comodoro, Napolitano, or something similar.

For top o' the line: Jaragua, Intercontinental Quinto Centenario, or the old Sheriton-whose new name I don't remember; or the Hotel Santo Domingo/Hispa?ola.

These are much closer to the Colonial Zone, museums, and so forth.

My personal favorites are the Hotel Santo Domingo/Hispaniola duo and Hotel Palacio. The latter is a small inn located in the heart of the Colonial Zone. If price is of concern, but you still need the ammenities of a full size hotel, then I highly recommend the Hispaniola. This hotel offers very good service, nice entertainment (casino, large pool, disco) and the advantage of having more posh Hotel Santo Domingo right across the street from you. Hotel SD is lovely, classy and understatedly elegant (no heavy human traffic a la Jaragua). You will be away from the Colonial Zone and the main "action" of the Malecon a bit, but you can easily hop on a cab for a few pesos. Hope this helps.

By the way Hillbilly, the old Sheraton is now the Melia Santo Domingo, I think.

Natasha

Hi Natasha,

> > > "This hotel, along with the Hispaniola are my favorites in SD." < < <

The last time we were in SD we used the Hispaniola (my favorite hotel, moderately priced, adequate
rooms, service, etc.) as sort of a "B&B", the pool side breakfast/ brunch semi-buffet (as every thing is
cooked to order) was/ is excellent. Sunday mornings many Dominican families would be present for the
breakfast and, possibly, the pool as sort of family outing.

The property has a definite "retro" feel, the decor and in part the manual elevator (operated by an
attendant :) take you back to an era (40', 50', 60's) before the advent of the 'mega all inclusive', in a time
when 'a coat and tie' were the rule, not the exception, for air travel. Without much trouble one can conjure
up a "Buena Vista Social Club" experience, (Havana, pre Castro) and certainly Santo Domingo (Ciudad
Trujillo then) when the airliners of the day sported four *BIG* radial piston engines. :)

As a side bar, my wife worked for a time (1970's) at the Hispaniola as secretary to the 'food & beverage'
manager. Also she sort of became the 'in house' english speaking (USA) expert. . .

Hispa?ola Hotel & TKS Natasha-Meli?, yeah!

I have been staying at the Hispa?ola since 1962, which is before most of you all were born. I certainly agree with CES's take on the place and it is a very "comfortable" place to stay-no doubt.

The Meli?/formerly Sheriton is on the Sea/Malecon and on hotel row. Close enough to walk to a lot of places.

I remember when the hotels in Santo Domingo (all four of them) were less than 50 pesos a night!!! Man....
