In light of other threads discussing violence ratings, I found this report both thorough and interesting. It is a study of global peace, with results presented in a peace index country by country.

Western Europe and Scandinavian countries fared well. Canada did well. U.S. not so good. No surprises there. And Dominican Republic? Rated 93 out of 139, just behind the U.S.

dv8- You have to read how they compiled the data to create the index. I cannot speak for Sierra Leone, but look at the factors that peaceful countries share in common and then decide how the DR stacks up.

• "Well functioning government
• Sound business environment
• Respectful of human rights and tolerance
• Good relations with neighbouring states
• High levels of freedom of information
• Acceptance of others
• High participation rates in primary and secondary education
• Low levels of corruption
• Equitable sharing of resources."

And while I didn't mention it in the first post, Russia scored poorly.

Here is a condensed summary from National Geographic, for those who prefer reading a brief version.
