There is a new infomercial out there claiming the wonders of a prickly pear fruit. It looks very expensive. The concept is that the cactus has rejuvenating properties because it has to grow in such a hostile environment.

We studied something like this in my Biochemistry course. Anything living in extreme environments has something called heat shock proteins. The concept of the cactus as a health food is that by eating it, you will be able to make your own heat shock proteins and that it is a cure for whatever ails you. I don't believe it, but on the other hand they are also saying that eating cold water fish is good for you and they would also have heat shock proteins. The ad I saw was based on the Nopal or Prickly Pear cactus. One thing it is not is cheap at about a dollar per ounce:

Nopal Party Cactus

The other big wonder cure nowadays is kombucha tea which is about a tenth of the price of the prickly pear drinks. People who like that often make there own.

I just saw nopal in pill form and it had all of one gram of cactus in it per pill. I don't care how effective it might be, I don't think a gram of any plant is going to do much for you!

Guys, does anyone know where to buy online kombucha mushroom to make tea out of? I think it is very good for your health, but can't find it anywhere. :( Please post if you know online address. Sorry if I am getting out of the subject.

Thank you very much in advance!

Ebay for kombucha starter. $2 plus shipping. It's not really like a mushroom at all; it's more like a yeast or sour dough starter. Youtube has a bunch of videos on it.

Prickly Pear is that a "paw-paw?"

I used to pick a lot of those in Italy and eat them. Bloody delicious. Almost as delicious as strawberries, for me.

Be warned - when picking these (at least the Southern Italian version) you should wear heavy leather gloves - or use a long piece of bamboo with the last 12" split into 3 pieces and wedged apart by a rock.
And for crying out loud - NEVER put them in your board-shorts pocket!!

That was a traumatic experience that I only needed to endure once!

I was picking the spiny little hairs out of the tackle for days - which is just not done in polite Italian company.

A paw paw in the US is yet another tree which I don't think is the same as what you refer to in Italy. It is confusing with the thread title refering to the red cactus, the dragon fruit being different and now the paw-paw.
