Hi everyone,

I was in Costambar today & found it very puzzling. Has the place just suffered badly from the recession or is there another reason all the shops & restaurants have closed?
It still seams a lovely place but it seems to have suffered badly.
I am thinking of buying there because I love POP, but I'm worried about the reason for such a suvere decline in the area.
Can anyone let me know what is the state of play there and how it looks for the future?

I own a home there and love it. It is summer remember so very slow right now which is a nice break from the busy winter when all the snow birds arrive. I like that I can walk around, am close to the beach and there are many nice restaurants open with good food. I would not live anywhere else

I agree with Sylindr in that it could be a nice place to spend time. My main reservations, since it is "on the wrong side of the bay" are water and other city services. I would imagine that electricity is what it like anywhere...you need an inverter or a genset to be comfortable 24/7. He!! I am in Santiago right now with the generator going for the last 3 hours...

As an investment, I am not that familiar with RE in that area but I an thinking that no, it might not work. For a place to stay for a couple of months, yeah, I even know some people up there that play bridge!! Need to get them down here now and then...

I have an invertor and planta for back up as well as a sisterna for water storage and life is very comfortable. The road is finally getting fixed properly, they have done a lot of work to the golf course and there is a bit of new development. I think long term it could be a great place and hope to be her a good long time.

I think Coatambar is great. I purchased a condo which has at least doubled in value in 10 years. The secret is to be very selective in what you purchase. Last year three condos went up for sale and were purchased by friends of some of the owners and were never advertised. As far as electricty I have 8 batteries and no problems. In 25 years I have never been the victim of any cirme, we have a sereno and very good security. I prefer Costambar to Sousa it is alot quieter. The last time we went to Sousa was in about 1995 and we were so sick of being harassed we never went back.

I have lived there for 2 years full time and owned property for 6 years and I have not been a victim of crime either!!! Its outside people talking generalities that give it a bad name. It is by NO means a ghost town... it is a wonderful community full of great people who like to live quiet lives and don't want all the hassle that comes with places like Sosua. The beach is wonderful and no one bothers you EVER. People have different likes but trashing a place you know nothing about is uncalled for.

You should rent there for a while and get a feel for the place.

By then you will know people and I'm sure in a much better position to buy and negotiate on a property.

Robert took the words right out of my mouth.

Costambar isn't for everybody, but those of who like it here wouldn't consider anywhere else, as Syl says.

As regards bars & restaurants that have closed I can only think of two in the whole town, & they only appear to be "resting". We're in the middle of a worldwide recession & everybody has been tightening their belts so often it is better to shortening your opening hours & lower your overheads to help your business survive.

We however haven't, the Gym Bar is open from 7.30am to 11.30pm Monday to Saturday as always ;-)

i have been living here for a year and i am a bit in two minds about it. i like the fact that is peaceful and quiet, i am not scared to walk there (even at night), i can walk my dog without people fainting when they see it. i generally do not use much bars, restaurants and shops but i take comfort knowing i can always take my guest for a bear or a drink, order a pizza or get cat food if needed. in other words - all is well.
but i also see the decline and abandoned ruined buildings. and i see the beach full of cheap, uneducated dominicans who come there every weekend with their loud music and leave piles of rubbish and the sea of urine.
if you want to rent or buy stay clear of the beach and laguna area and stick to golf course area and the hills: peace and tranquility.

Costambar

Thanks guys,

I think that's answered alot of questions for me.

I'm in Cabarete now & I like like it but the property is much more expensive, I'll keep looking I think!!!

costambar will pick up significantly when the snow birds come back.

we have a home in costambar and the reason we love it there is because of the quiet. we do not want to live in a resort village. we have all the services that we need; grocery, bars, restaurants, good close friends we trust, etc. we love it just the way it is !

Costambar is strange, i think it has a great beach (don't like busy beaches), the roads are crap and I can't imagine it busy. I've visited all year round and never seen more than a few people (who seem to be the local expat gang) and some locals wandering around, never sure where they are going as there isn't much to do down there. The big negative about that place is the length of time they have been pi$$ing about with a simple road, gives the impression it is slightly bottom of the list when it comes to getting anything done, the forgotten. I don't know if this has changed much I haven't been down for ages, but if it could improve on these simple things it definately has masses of potential. One other thing that might work against some is you defo get that everyone knows your business kind of impression, fall out with one and you lose half your social circle kinda thing, whether thus is true or not I am unsure, gives all the signs of that kind of place though.

I've been down to POP 3 times this year and stayed in Costambar/Cofembar twice. Although many shops and businesses were closed or for sale, there also is growth going on re condos being built and the golf course etc... I really enjoyed the fact that the beach was not over run with tourists and people trying to sell me stuff. Plus I felt totally secure being out on my own on my daily walks etc. The only thing is, the power is off much of the time and you do need back up generators and water storage etc. The house I stayed in the first time had an excellent batttery backup system and enough water to last for weeks... the second time, the system was inadequate so the fridge never worked and we ran out of water for showering and resorted to using a bucket.. LOL no worries but if you're planning on living there long term I'd definitely ensure that your place is adequately prepared for such issues.

Cofembar??? Never have heard of it...you sure you are not referring to Cofresi??

Cofembar is the neighborhood just outside the gates of Costambar. You pass through it as you go down any of the main roads leading into Costambar. I kept referring to it as Costambar and hearing my boyfriend and his family calling it Cofembar thinking they were pronouncing it lispy in Spanish LOL until they explained to me on my last trip down. Cofresi is further down from Costambar towards Ocean World I believe.

Hmmm, you learn something new every day. I have never heard that area referred to as such.I assume you mean the really bad road leading in to Costambar, and surrounds??

Yes, I know Cofresi very well.
