I was sitting with a couple of friends having a beer, early evening last night, still light. Heard some drama up the side street and two young lads came running down the road in a more than dashing for the bus manner. I couldn't catch what was being shouted but guys from both side of the street jumped up but by the time they got what was going on the lads had ran through and over the main street, but they all gave chase. I thought they had got away. 5 mins later I could here a load of drama coming back up the street, then 2 guys holding the two young lads came back over my direction. I was nosey so I needed to find what had happened and what was going to happen. I never poke my nose in to others business so I just stood in the street and watched. Both the young lads got tied to the back of a 4x4 and lashed with electrical cable for a good half hour, seems all the adults got involved which was a little disturbing for me, but I guess they have reason. Turns out they had held a cut throat razor to the mother of the guy who owns the colmados neck and attempted to rob her.
After all this I noticed the PN sitting up the road observing.

If you like that sort of thing, there are lots of similar examples on youtube....

Not really something I could take part in, but I suspect if it was my mother I'd be dragging them down the road in a 4x4 not just tethering them to it.
I am on the fence with this kind of justice, but there was no room for error, they had the correct boys, I expect that lashing will stay ingrained for significantly longer than a couple of days in a cell.

That's really nothing, in some backwards parts of America they would've been tortured and shot.

With all sincerity, justice needs to be served if and when someone commits wrongdoing. However, I don't think el pueblo should do it. In the case mentioned above, I would say, "thats what they get!", but then the logical side of me would say, "thats dangerous". Its dangerous because its too easy for people to allow their emotions get the best of them and take things too far.

What happens when the people lash out with the intent to render justice but the actual 'target' is no longer available? And then all that rage is unleashed on other innocent people who fit the 'profile' close enough??
That is NOT justice, that is mob violence and there is a big difference.
Take this video for an example - YouTube - un haitiano mata a un dominicano its a good example of why this type of thing is dangerous.

And I have seen and heard of other cases just like this one, where a 'group' of innocent people is attacked because in the mind of the mob they 'represent' the original offender(s). That would be like if one person wanted to avenge himself because a Chinese (or any other nationality, race) person killed a family member of his. The Chinese person is caught by the Police and goes to jail, but the person is not satisfied and so goes and gets a gun and starts to shoot and any and every Chinese person he sees in the street. That is a very sick, twisted, perverted form of 'justice', and there is no justification for that.

Of course, what I describe is different from the example mentioned above, but it highlights the inherent danger in 'vigilante justice'. It should not be encouraged or allowed. The Police force needs to be overhauled and reinforced so that one day people can and will just call the Police before going and grabbing their machetes and ropes.

Would be nice but will never happen in my lifetime. An example of lack of interest is the ongoing with my neighbours across the street. The man of the house is a bit of a drinker, comes home a kicks seven bells out of the Mrs several times a month. We have called the police numerous times after it getting so out of hand and spilling into the street on occasion, we've had the kids in a couple of times to hide them from it but not once have they turned to arrest him or even see what is going on. That isn't even corruption which I accept as part of life here, that is plain lazy, not caring which I now also accept as part of life here. Every man for himself, I think we all know that but thankfully rarely need to be reminded. I suppose it is better than a police force that arrests me for throwing my cigarete butt in the highstreet back in the UK ( that actually happened to me).

Yea, unfortunately you are probably right. The nonchalant, easy going attitude of Dominican society is probably simultaneously the best and worst things about it. A social paradox like no other.
