DECEMBER 1, 2010 ? MARANATHA, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC - Transcending Poverty, Org. held its Grand Opening of a new community kitchen facility at Villa Emmanuel in Maranantha, Dominican Republic on Wednesday December 1, 2010.
Transcending Poverty is a non-profit organization run completely by volunteers, which aims to create self-sustaining communities providing daily nourishing meals, as well as other basic living necessities to recipients - without the need for money.
Immediately meeting the most urgent of needs for recipients, community programs begin with a kitchen. Over a period of three ? six months, recipients are trained in self-sustainability skills such as maintaining the community garden, breeding chickens, water purification, and general construction. Most importantly within each community, every recipient is also a participant.
The Villa Emmanuel facility has begun providing daily nourishing meals to over sixty below poverty-level recipients, of which the majority are children under the age of 10. Over the next three months, a large community garden is planned, as well as a community chicken corral to provide for food needs henceforth. Additionally, the recipients will also be taught basic English speaking lessons. Through education and community skills, recipients will learn how to self-sustain within their community without the need for money ? working together to help one another, and Transcending Poverty.
The Villa Emmanuel Chapter, like all the charitable work of Transcending Poverty, is not supported by government funding, but is the result of the donations and efforts of many private individuals and organizations.
Transcending Poverty reports that though recent donations have allowed for basic infrastructure needed to get the Villa Emmanuel Chapter up and running, several items are still in great need:
? A Refrigerator ? used or new, working or not
? An Oven ? used or new, working or not
? A Door ? intended to secure the kitchen area at night from theft
? Fence - for a Chicken Corral
? Rebar ? intended to secure the windows at night from theft
? Food Channel Suppliers ? Supermarkets, Restaurants, or Bakeries that throw away unwanted or expired food at the end of the night can become part of our vendor food channel ? we come and pick up the food every night desired.
