DR Cell phone question

I will be traveling with a missions group from the US in June. I have been told to purchase a cell phone in Santiago and purchase a card for the minutes. Will the old Cingular phones from the US work with the SIM cards in the DR or do I need to buy a phone as well?

If your old phone is unlocked and uses a sim card there, you will be able to use it here with a sim card purchased here. I know this from experience.

you have to have your old phone unlocked and buy a sim card u can get one from Orange for 100 peso and u can figure out how to unlock if u check out youtube. I hear Vivo is great service over there. I had bout a tmobile g1 off craiglist for $50 US simply because i wanted a cheap smartphone over there so i could use GPS or navi.
