I'm too crippled up to do it myself, although I did do concrete construction from age 17-20. On this place I wanted ten foot ceilings on the bottom also so they had to drop the floor and raised the top. Ceiling/floor was poured today and hopefully the place will be finished in September.

On my house they used a bucket and block and tackle to move supplies up. Then mixed and poured the roof. LOL it never ceases to amaze me how little mechanical mechanisims they use to build the houses but they seem to be better built than ones stateside with all the extra technology to help.

Definitely not better ,,there are no proper checks done on the cement pours and there are no proper levels so that water never runs where it should. and the reinforcement is far from good inan earthquake prone country

In response to Kipling: The renovations are being done by a qualified engineer and the rebar...etc is to code for earthquakes. We have previous experience with her building standards and have no complaints. The sand and gravel have no salt in them and the water is clean. Anymore observations?

This is only the first floor, the roof on the second floor will be sloped and tiled. As far as water, Kipling, there will be no issues, the builder know what she's doing, and so do I.

maybe anastacio meant the tree? some of them buggers have really huge and strong roots that could break the floor/wall.

The tree has been there longer than the house and provides a fair amount of shade. I wish I had more room to plant and I'd be surrounded by trees. This house will be temporary housing for us, until we build the next place, then it will become rental housing, perhaps for tourists...etc.

Looks good. Brings back memories of what a friend of mine called the "Garage Mahal". We started with a garage. Then added an apartment behind it and then, what the heck, put on a second floor for another apartment. All in all it was good experience and turned out well. We watched every detail since it was on the same property where we live. Hopefully you can also keep tabs on the details. I hope it comes out well.

The builder knows if she does a good job she'll get more business from us, and if not she'll be SOL. Her daughters are currently going to Hillbilly's university so she has bills to pay.

Your place looks GREAT!
The house next door will fall during a small "Quake", No support columns, just blocks!
