Many of my gringo (non-Dominican) friends here have married Dominicans. A few are more or less happy. Many wish they never had but bought property here which they don't want to lose via divorce. Some are dead and no longer care.
To be fair to all concerned, the successfull marriages are almost
always to persons of similar age and socio/economic background. The problem cases revolve around huge age and wealth differences.
One always wants to believe that one is attractive to the opposite sex, no matter what the mirror tells you.
The buzz around Puerto Plata these days is the case of the sudden
death three weeks ago of a 60 year old Swiss national who was always seen with a stunning, very young, Dominican girl. He reportedly brought 7 million pesos into the country, bought her some gold jewelry, and himself really heavy gold which he wore like a Dominican York. The rest of the money went into a large house, two SUV's, a bank account, and a home safe.
To all appearances he was in love, and she too. There were
disturbing rumours about her having a Dominican lover, but who would listen to rumours when a couple is so obviously in love! This girl played the role to the hilt. I want to find a replica of the Academy Award to give her.
A suspicious marriage certificate appeared dated just hours before he died of symptoms identical to poisoning. The safe was ransacked,the cash and a firearm were missing Her Dominican boyfriend and numerous members of the "bride's" family are now occupying the house.
His body was sent to Santo Domingo for autopsy.
Swiss police have arrived here to investigate. Apparently many German retirees here have also died here under similar circumstances. Proof is hard to come by.
The moral of the story is: "Keep your eyes open. Young people here are no more likely to fall in love with the fat, ugly, and/or old than where you are from. If you want to delude yourself, it can be expensive. It can even cost you your life."
