I heard that there are riots or wars going on in DR. Is this true? I was planning on my first trip to DR in two month and someone told me there heard this. Can anyone confirm if this is true?

Since this will be my first time to DR, it is overall a safe island?

I appreciate any comments. Thank you!

No riots or wars, just some local protests in some lowerclass neiborhoods due to the lack of free electricity and water supply!

As a tourist, you hardly would get even close to those places or you would be informed prior on leaving your hotel!

So for the safety use your NY common sense and you will enjoy a nice vacation!

Enjoy your stay!

Normaly the DR is a save country as long you behave normal. Dont try to be smarter than a Dominican, because you are not !!!! Dont chance money in the street, dont use drugs, dont fight ect..

About the ritos, i can not read anything in the DR newspapers.

Bey, Hans.

DR is safer than where you are coming from.

I have been living here for 3 years and the only time I had seen riots was on TV. These riots take place in guettos and in other low-class neighborhoods. You will never see any action apart from listening to merengue dance music and drinking run & coke near the swiming pool. Have fun in DR and come again and again to this beautiful country.

Re: Just spent two weeks there...

This is crazy talk. DR is one of the safest places I've ever traveled to. The people are very kind. i lost my wallet under chaise lounge at Coconut Palms near Sosua. it had $4000 pesos & $190 US in it. The maid returned it to my room. She looked at my driver's licence and recognized me. i was told that this type of behaviour is typical. I walked the streets day & night and always felt safe. Don't worry, enjoy your visit.

I've been several times both with friends and on my own and have always felt safe. I love the Dominican people, they are so friendly and happy.

Come visit!
You'll love it here, no matter where you go. Riots? When a guy burns a tire in front of his house because the power went out during the all-star baseball game...they report it as a riot/protest.

At the same time, would you walk around in the back streets of Somecity USA with money hanging out of your pockets at 2am? Well, don't do it here either. The people here are very peaceful, and friendly to all, it is just like any other country in the world (except maybe Vatican City). A little common sense goes a long way.

The biggest thieves that you have to worry about (EXTREMELY DANGEROUS) are on the beach. They hide everywhere amongst the tourists...then...when you least expect it...they LEAP out and try to sell you braids/cheap jewelry/coconuts/oysters/pineapples... WATCH OUT!

Enjoy the DR, you are going to love it.

Safety a MAJOR problem

Rhonda,

The DR has a very high crime rate - much worse than the ghettos of LA or NYC. If you are a tourist you will be at risk. Best not to leave the resort, and avoid the locals. This board is very one sided and I think they must get a cut because with all the killings, riots, and tourist attacks everyone still finds the DR as paradise. If you want paradise try Puerto Rico or someplace other than the DR.

Sincerely,
Someone that speaks the truth

Whatever Manny is doesn't matter. Newcomers should stick to the resorts and only venture outside the resorts if escorted by a local. The worst that can happen is what Manny says. Tourists for some unknown reason always seem to get lost in the most dangerous areas.Usually though they can end up being scheisted by the natives.

Manny - are you for real?

I think your comparison to the ghettos of LA & NYC is going way too far (except maybe if we're talking about the ghettos of the big cities in the DR). The DR is definately on a whole not more dangerous than the US or Europe. Common sense should be exercised everywhere.

I have been visiting the DR for the past 3 years and have never had any problems. The people are friendly and very helpful. I feel very safe walking the streets day and night..... On the beaches always stay in groups and no one will bother you....except the vendors selling their paintings, sunglasses, beads and etc. Enjoy your time...it's a beautiful place. I will be returning in 2 weeks and I just can't wait to see my DR friends. They are a delight to be around.

I hope you have a safe trip. When is your trip?

Re: PR=Paradise, DR=Crime and Povery

Why don't you mention a section of PR called " La Perla ". You know where it is. That is such a DUMP that the Puerto Rican police do not venture down there. How about ' El Condado " Ever been there Manny??
I have been all over central America and the Caribeean. This will be my first trip to the DR.
In my book so far. Costa Rica is number one. Hope to change this order after my trip to DR. As far as La Isla Bonita......NEVER AGAIN !!!!!!.
