hi everyone! in a week i'm going to santo domingo for the first time for a semester at PUCMM. i'm getting very excited and nervous. any comments on PUCMM? what about hurricane season? is it very hard to get out if one comes?(parents are nervous!) also, this may sound shallow, but what do 20 year old dominican girls wear? i read in a travel book that women only wear long skirts/dresses. want to fit in as much as possible & just wondering what to pack. don't want to pack anything i don't need. also, are sandals acceptable? any other comments/suggestions/advice for a first-timer from florida?? thank you!! angie

What dominican girls wear ...

I've been there 3 times (north coast) and I noticed that most of the dominican girls are dressed very modern, a lot of them absolutely in the latest fashion. Nice skirts (most of them short), great shoes (where do they buy these ???), just beautiful and very female.

Have fun down there!

Re: What dominican girls wear ...

I've never seen any young Dominican women wearing baggy sweatpants or shirts, other than that they seem to dress very similar to North American Girls. I personally think that they take pride in their appearance.

See "What if caught in a hurricane" at http://www.dr1.com/daily/hurricane.shtml#anchor614255. See www.BocaChicaBeach.net/when_to_visit.html for current weather, weather trends, and statistics. This will help you know what temperatures to expect, which will affect what you wear.

Most young women students wear tight jeans and very tight t-shirts with black boots or athletic shoes.

Angie, all of the responses you've received regarding girls' clothing is accurate. Absolutely no baggy stuff! Very true that the girls your age have great bodies, wear tight, modern clothing (both pants and short skirts) to "show it off." Once you get there in S.D. you'll judge for yourself. Only old ladies like me wear skirts, either knee length or longer.
But, I remember being 20 years old !! go for it!! but don't "flaunt" it under the guys' noses, because there's "trouble" brewing with that ... surely you know that. Good luck with your stay there! -Mame-

Re: What dominican Female Age appropiate!..

Unlike in the state the Mothers are dress age appropiate. When I go back I remember to bring my dressy clothes. The person wear their best when they go out into public places. No female ever goes out looking like a mess.

My Dominican friend graduated from PUCMM and received a wonderful education there. He has nothing but good things to say about the university. Good luck and enjoy your studies there!

Re: phone

Angie,
You'll need to have your phone activated locally, you can buy time for your cell phone there, but any pre-paid time you have here will not transfer to one of the service providers there.. The cell phone services in the DR are good, especially around the cities.. I'd recommend taking a digital phone if you are going to be around the cities most of the time, but not Sprint.. Sprint puts in a security code that they have to go in and look for before they can activate your phone.. They can do it, but it costs about $60-80 US dollars and you'll have to wait 1-2 weeks.. I'm not that knowledgeable about this, but have helped a couple of people and had a couple of phones activated for myself.. so I wanted to post a little since I didn't see any other answers already posted... If you don't take a phone, you can buy one locally, starting around $3,000 pesos ($200 US Dollars) and going on up to $500 depending on what you want.
