From DR1 news:
11. Major drug haul at Punta Cana airport
At least 35 people have been arrested at Punta Cana International Airport where between 670 and 680 kilos of cocaine were discovered inside 28 suitcases yesterday, Wednesday 20 March. Those arrested include senior and junior officers of the National Drug Control Agency (DNCD), the National Investigations Department (DNI), the Specialist Airport Security Corps (CESA) and the Customs Department.
According to information obtained by Listin Diario, almost everyone involved in the security detail at the airport has been arrested and the DNCD will hold a press conference later today, Thursday 21 March, to provide more details on the case.
Listin Diario says that the drugs were found on an executive jet that was due to leave for Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris, whereas Hoy newspaper says that the plane was heading for the Portuguese-owned Azores, and had three French pilots and other French passengers. El Caribe also says the plane was due to fly to the Azores, and that four French pilots are under arrest, and they were discovered following a surveillance operation carried out by the DNCD, CESA and other security forces. An army captain, Bolivar Mercado Diaz and an Air Force colonel, Jose Brazoban were mentioned by the DNCD.
The director of Customs has denied that any of his staff are under arrest.
So DNCD arrested DNCD and the rest.... So, who is left there now checking for drugs? Doesn't really matter, or?
One wonders that there is anybody left to do arrests at all...
