First Sosua Jewelry Class Receives Diplomas

Mayor Ilana Neumann of Sos?a handed out diplomas last weekend to 25 girls between the ages of thirteen to fifteen for making jewelry. The girls had learned during the course to make jewelry like earrings, brooches, pendants, bracelets and necklaces with beads, pieces of metal and metal wire, leather and thread. The girls were invited to the graduation ceremony in the great hall of the town hall.

Here the students and their parents were welcomed with a drink, a snack and a welcome from the mayor. The mayor said she was inspired by a wise Chinese saying: 'Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach him to fish and you feed him for life'. Furthermore, she thanked the two teachers Herminia de Faringthon and Daphna Villaman for their contributions to the project

Although I appreciate the mayor's efforts, teaching these girls how to make necklaces and beading isn't much of a future especially when the mayor has plans to demolish Sosua beach. Where are these girls going to work making these bracelets and where can they sell them?????? The mayor is contradicting her agenda to remove beach and street vendors. Why not teach these girls how to become proper waitresses, bartenders and the basics of the service industry.

The mayor should focus on enforcement of children attending school till high school graduation.
Provide computers in the classroom, look for sponsors.
Making and selling trinkets to tourists hardly prepares these girls for modern advancements or feeding themselves.
