You can get good tires that are imported into the DR. Before being intstalled check the date of manufacture that is imprinted on the side of the tire. You don't want to buy anything that has been sitting for a couple of years. Tell the place where you buy them that you want current inventory.

You can get good used tires lots of places. Try Japan Motors (I think) on the east side of the highway Navarette to Santiago, not far from the turn-off to Villa Gonzalez. These places will take your old tire(s) off, bring out a "new" one, test it, and install it for a fixed price. Used to be around US$15, now much, much more. But not $150.

Tip: Have a peso to measure the tread, and send back the first two they show you.

Tip 2: if you can't tell what's a good tire, spend the $150 apiece and take the same chances.
