Hello, A friend of mine stayed in Puerto plata last summer and mentioned that the sand fleas on the beach were
horrific...Any issues with sand fleas on Susua Beach?

Never encountered sand fleas on Sosua beach. There are lots of sand fleas on Parris Island South Carolina.

Sand fleas are great bait for catching pompano and whiting.

But I've never heard of them crawling out of the sand to attack people.

Your " never heard of them crawling out of the sand to attack people" makes you a fortunate man!!
Those little bastards can destroy a day at the beach.

don't confuse them with our old friend "crabs'.... body lice that one can catch various places

they prefer dark, moist environments

You should were mosquito repellent during the day so sand flees nor mosquitoes would bother you. Having said that, I also never had a problem with sand fleas in Sosua or any other beach in the DR for that matter.

I think there are sand fleas that only come out at night? I've been to places where there are sand fleas and it's not something you'd miss.

I doubt you three are talking about the same animal.

Sand Fleas (aka Mole Crab) the crustacean. Excellent Pompano bait.

Sand Fleas (aka Chigoe) the parasitic insect found in tropical areas, commonly in beaches, farms, and wooded areas.

We never had much of them in the PC area until this year. They came with the seaweed. If its cleaned up well you don't really get them but if its a unkept beach they can be a pain. Bug repellent usually stops them.

It sounds like they can morph into a different species at will.

The faster we get a handle on this sand flea problem, the better.
