The procedure has changed somewhat recently. Standard practice now is 30 chest compressions and two breaths. Press hard and fast with your full weight directly over the chest. Push to the beat of "staying alive" as a guide to speed of the compressions.
Depress the chest to about halfway. It is not uncommon to break a few ribs when doing CPR correctly.
CPR for infants is a bit trickier. An infant is a little person you can hold in your hand. Bigger than that use the above method.
