I've been in the DR on and off since 2010. So a bit slow on joining a forum like this. Got Facebook, which is handy for some info, but more local stuff is better.
Currently living aboard a trawler in Puerto Bahia Marina just outside Samana. Don't go out much as I don't drive after dark here, and when I do go out I'm accompanied by my very large husky dog - which makes socialising awkward - as you can imagine, but he keeps all sorts of issues simple. Very few people approach when they've a big, blue-eyed pup staring at them :cheeky:.
Basically, just looking to make some friends and share information and tips for surviving ... :D

Heard a lot about Samana. Being a single older lady myself I'm interested in your experiences living there. How easy is it to get to know people? How safe do you feel? Are there places to swim and frolic in the ocean not too far away from you that allows dogs? Is it affordable for a person living on a pension? I've spent the last four winters in the Puerto Plata/Sosua/Cabarete area. Thoroughly enjoyed it but would like to explore further.

Welcome aboard Hazel. Another boatie is always a welcome sight. Where did you come into Samana from? Cruising long?

There is a host of good information on DR1 and it can also be quite interesting at times.

welcome aboard.
boaties are always welcome,
just careful with some sorts of Cheffiiieees.
is your Huskie a Male?
my #1 sized Chihuahua Lucy likes big Males,
and as opposed to your Huskie, she make's socializing very easy, lol.
i hope you have the Trawler tied up well this time of the season.

"pension"?
Depends on the amount of your pension, and the lifestyle you wish to enjoy here now doesn't it?????

Hey folks, thanks for the amazing welcome! I've been a wee bitty caught up in stuff!
Yup, I saw the photo and Yup - it's the same guy .... I added a wee update to the thread this evening.
Been in and out of the DR since 2010. Returned from PR and VIs about 20 months ago. This is about the only place we can afford in the Caribbean.
Our boat is an old lady, built about 1980.... but doing well. Like most elderly folks, she needs a wee bit of cosmetic surgery ;) in places, but she's a sturdy girl.
My dog is a neutered male and adores all other canines. He's fatal to cats, chickens .... or basically anything not human or canine ....
