Transporters get big no from population
Diario Libre reports today, Thursday 19 May 2016 that the voters have given a resounding no to the transport kingpins who were seeking election to the legislature. Shortly before the election, Fenatrado trucking association kingpin Blas Peralta was stopped from running for Congress on the PRM ticket after being accused of murdering former UASD rector Mateo Febrillet. Meanwhile, Juan Hubieres, running for the PRM, failed in his bid for senator for the Province of Santo Domingo. He received just 25.39% of the vote, or 96,693 votes compared to 67.27% of the vote received by incumbent Cristina Lizardo with 256,183 votes as of Bulletin 7. Another transport leader, Antonio Marte of Conatra lost the election for senator for Santiago Rodriguez. Running for the PRM, he obtained 40.65% of the vote, or 10,514 votes to 15,162 votes for Antonio Cruz, the PLD candidate who won with 58.62%. Another transporter, Rafael Caminero failed in his bid to be elected mayor of Boca Chica for the PRM, when he received only 18% of the vote to sitting mayor Daniel Ozuna who obtained 30.7%.
The Central Electoral Board (JCE) had rejected an application for formal party recognition from the leading transport kingpins, who are known for imposing their demands on the authorities and commuters through the use of vandalism and violence.
