As kids, we used to see '1J4' spray-painted on walls, and we pronounced it as such: UNO, JOTA, CUATRO. We would later learn about la gesta gloriosa de Constanza, Maimón, y Estero Hondo.

On 14 June 1959, exiled anti-trujillistas landed on the island, in an effort to topple the dictator.

The Fires of Jubilee is a book about Nat Turner's Rebellion, a slave revolt in Virginia, 1831.

The real reason the Hermanas Mirabals were killed. Socialist/Communist opposition to Trujillo. My wife spent a few summer vacations with Minou and her cousin Lilita Mirabal ( who also had other family killed by Trujillo.)
