de Janiero Brazil that is..

For those who will ask what does this have to do with the DR, if you've asked yourself "Should I visit the DR or another place" you can use this info for a comparison since I have been to both. Besides, Rob may have a special interest in this post since he lived there for a while and gave me some info.

I was reading some of those love lorn post that went out while I was away in the Mars Venus section and I have to say girls, give those Brazilian men a chance! Sometimes Dom-men-can but Brazilians can all the time and with class! No the men I met here don't act like cro-magnons asking for $$, handouts, apparal etc. wow.. what a refreshing change. The below is all my experience so that's the disclaimer here if you've been there and disagree then it's all good. Also there are probably spelling mistakes since I just flew in this morning and went straight to work (straight flight from Rio to Atlanta, Delta does it right, they need to do the same for Santo Domingo) Sorry for the long post but I want to give you a good idea of my experience.

Beach observations: Ipanema beach - best beach in Rio. On Sundays I could not find my towl after swimming there were so many people. Although I stayed right on Copacabana beach and it was really nice, I think it is on a decline. Maybe 30 years ago it was in its glory but it is steadily going down hill. Some say that Barra beach is the best lots of surfing and hangliders landing right there, nice to watch the men do that. Like the DR, all the beaches have people selling you everything you could imagine you don't even have to get off the beach towl. But they don't hound you, just say one "no" and that's enough. If you wanna people watch, perhaps meet a nice Carioca man, walk around the guys playing futevoli (pronounced Fu-che-volley)right on the beach. It just blew my mind how good these guys are playing a game that is basically volleyball without using their hands. Me being a voleyball lover had to watch. I put down my wrap or (changa) down where they are playing (all the Rio girls have one that they wear to the beach.) Played the flirtatious or innocent type, took a small camera with and filmed them (MQ knows about this method) its a great way to get them to come over to you. I have to say, in my opinion, from the Brazilizan men I saw, they have a way more georgous body than DR men, they are very big on working out and looking good, every day you will see people jogging and biking down the Copacabana or other boardwalks. It's just a way of life there. Don't worry ladies, their not too picky with the women. Lots of Brazilian women are georgous too but men still like the big butt and some softness around the hips. 90% of Brazilian men wear swim trunks that are short and a little tight like spandex shorts, so it makes it real nice to see what the goods look like ;)

People observations: Rio didn't have the typical money grubbing sanky action I had seen in the DR (except for the beggers on the street). This meaning that most men seem to be at the beach for a reason either playing soccer or futevoli. Not a lot of guys oogling at women like they had never seen a woman before. In the DR I was used to being "undressed with the eyes." Men won't hound you too much. It's a little more subtle here. All you have to do is show the one your interested in a tiny bit and they are very nice about showing your attention back without over-doing it. The men seem to have a lot of class there (at least in my opinion) never was I asked for anything, in fact, it was their pleasure to be with me. Men came up to me and starting talking Portuguese right away but when they realized I only knew Spanish and English they were shocked. I was mistaken for a Brazilian women many times there and they would say in their accent "oh a sawt zat zew were a Brazilian woman". I would smile and say "obrigada" and that usually keep things going. I happened to be fortunate enough to be meeting my brother there who was on business with Embratel, a telecommunications company there. He introduced me to his co-workers and I was able to see a side of Rio that a lot of tourists don't see. I met several really nice guys who took me out for a few nights in the Leblon area. That area is a great place for restaurants and going out and very safe. I had a great time and got to know a few of them a bit better ;)

I noticed a much bigger color scheme in Rio then the DR. I mean (i.e. it's not a big black sanky selection, girls) I mistook these white European looking men not being Brazilian, in fact were. You can go from the Eurpoean look to black... my perference was the somewhere near a nice dark tan look ;)

Everyone was so nice and extremely helpful, from people in the street to shops and bars. I would have never expected to go to a big city like Rio and meet some many nice people who willingly went out of there way to help a complete stranger out. Compared to any other big city like NYC etc. Rio wins the prize in my book for friendly people. I also felt very safe there, lots of police around every corner watching things. I was wondering how to approach those guys, everyone of them were extremely good looking. It must be a requirement for the job ;)

If I walked out on the street I could fit in a little better than I did in the DR. All the Brazilian women wear bikini's no matter how fat you are, seriously. So if you beach it your wearing a bikini. My observations, only 1% wore an official "thong", most of the Brazilian bikini's are designed to just ride up your butt, don't worry about the wedgie, it's very fashionable. I bought 3 while I was there. I was expecting to see lots of topless girls, not a one did I see. The girls don't do it there, only the foreigners. (Bummer, right guys?)

I had a wonderful time in the "Cuidad Maravilhosa" but also took a trip to B?zios, a small town 2 hours northeast of Rio. Ever been there Rob? I fell in love with the town even more than Rio. It's very popular with the Cariocas to go there on vacation. (No gringos here, people) In fact, not a lick of English either. Spanish helped me out though. It was low season at the time but that made it nice. It's a penninsula, small fishing village, 5 miles wide with about 7 or 8 small beaches with a romantic and quaint Rua dos Pedras (town center - cobblestone main street with great little shops and restaurants) Brigette Bardot was a regular there. So if you go there take someone you really want to get to know better! I fell in love with Forr? no, he's not the name of my new lover, ladies, it's the music from the northern area of Brazil kind of like reggae but with more accordion in it.

Food / Drinks/ Music: Well, the Caipirinha beats the Brugal and Coke any day! I say that with passion. (It beat me a few times over the head too) I bought 3 bottles of the stuff. If you don't drink, a nice cold cononut with the straw poked right into it is awesome, but you got that in the DR too. Churrascaria's are hands down the best $12 american bucks for 1 you can eat all night if you wish and this the best meat you will have ever had. Except for my sickeness one night after going to Porcao, I love the food. I would not recommend eating the mayonaise based salads there, I was deathly ill one night and had to have a Dr. come to my hotel. For $50 bucks (visit, shot, and medicine) I was feeling better in the morning. Imagine what a house call would have set me back in the states? I ate at a few of the best restaurants in Rio (Satyricon being one) for half of what I'd pay in a big city in the states. The Real is really sinking lately. Pao de Queso.... I can not say how much I love that little cheesy dough ball....ummm. I woke up to the Samba drums a few times in the morning, and I agree they are loud but put you in the mood for sure.

All in all a wonderful time..I found it hard to return to rainy Atlanta but I'm holding on to my tan and I am planning on going back for carnival (1st week of March) to see my new "friends" and perhaps meet more ;) I have to say Rio has potential to steal your heart away... especially you women out there.

What about the Capoeira? You missed out big time!

Nothing like going to a "Batizado" to make new friends and really feel Rio's raw energy. It's something 99% of tourists would never see or be invited to.

That aside, glad you had fun, it's a wonderful city and country.

Theresa, How much a decent clean room or hotel cost there? how much a beer costs? How much money does one need to bring to have a DR type vacation there? How much food costs in a clean restaurant in day time?>
What are the visa requirements for gringos?
Please tell me. I have always wanted to go to rio but never actually got up to doing it. I will be in atlanta tomorrow then I have a choice to go to Mexico or to morocco. I chose morocco but now rio sounds good.
Please write soon, today.
Welcome back to DR1.

Het Tere:

Glad you had a lot of fun...but.....did you get????? I mean, sometimes these gentlemen's gentlemen can be so subtled that you may miss the signal. Whereas...we go straight for the kill, no questions asked, ratatatatah! How do you know if they are gay or not?

By the way, when you said Brazilians were better fit, were you talking about the guys on the beach, who must have a body pedigree to visit Hipanema or you mean all the regulars guys too are better fit than Dominicans? Did you go to the towns, neighborhoods, favelas? Aren't you generalizing?

It's like the girls. All Brazilian women are not that hot. I have seen the ones who migrated to New York, Miami and other cities and they are just as regular as can be. Not all Brazilian women belong in a Carnival School.

Musicqueen, you never read the positive

May I bring you back to the archives to a post I made regarding DR's Carnival in comparison to Rio's, where I said that those pretending to bring our Carnival to Brazil's level have a lot to learn about their carnival school system which makes it what it is.

You are just a sore bit......h. Lighten up. Cursi locavieja.hehehe.
Tu sabes, tu me recuerdas a "Laqueen" la rapera de Puerto Rico...oye como es que va....eso no quiere decir, que pa la cama voy!!!! Esa jeva si sabe lo que es musica, but you?

Like I said...you never have anything NICE to say!

In that post, you are just ridiculing DR's carnival...not just accentuating Rio's...

Y disc?lpame, pero ni soy cursi, ni loca y mucho menos vieja...

Ya quisieras t? encontrarte a alguien como yo para endulzarte la vida, papacito!

How do you know if they are gay or not?
I didn't have time to ask if they were gay they showed me enough attention to prove that point. The men reminded me a schmigend of European types in the manner of showing women attention but definetly had the latin in them. It's hard to explain.

OK well I did go to a favela.. for $50 a day I had a driver take me in a Honda passport to anywhere I wanted in the surrounding Rio area and he waited for me if I wanted to eat or shop or take pictures. I felt kinda special. He took me to Santa Teresa (my namesake !) a nice town very close to the next place he took me to, Santa Marta where a big favela is. Most favelas are all on the hill top, poverty but they get a wonderful view of the city! Believe it or not crime is not tolerated there. If someone steals or commits petty crime the drug lord finds and kills them no questions asked. The drug lord (one per favela) controls the area and EVERYONE even has satellite dishes. I pay $100 per/month here for satellite. Anyway, I am going off topic. I did not have the men there lift their shirts for me as I was mainly telling you about who I spent my time with there The higher class types. I went to Ipanema, not Hipanema, golo ;) I know not everyone is hot, just a big majority were. The guys who play soccer and football are not from Ipanema, the majority, from small surrounding towns. I was surrounded my more upclass so true, my view may be skewed.

Theresa, How much a decent clean room or hotel cost there? how much a beer costs? How much money does one need to bring to have a DR type vacation there? How much food costs in a clean restaurant in day time?>

Rooms are really that cheap, it would be har for me to generalize since they vary so much. In Rio I could say $130 in p/n off season but 5* would be a lot more. I stayed in the best hotel on the Copacabana, Copacabana Palace, but I did pay for it. I hate talking $$. You can look on their website for the off season rate, I paid a little less due to connections. In the small town went to I spent $80 a night at one of the best b n b's in town. For a beer I spent 2.50 Reals buying one on the Copacabana (at the rate of 3.85 Reals to 1 USD that is CHANGE, less than a buck) a caiprindha was 3.0 Reals on the beach, still less than a buck. But is you go to the Choperia (not what you are thinking guys) it's the brazilian word for "draft house" you might spend 1 / 1.5 more Reals per a beer/mixed drink. Grand totaling it to a whopping 4 Reals (almost a dollar). And the beer is great at those choperias;)
In a clean restaurant you will spend probaly $29 bucks for 2 in a Brazilian type restaurant that will include all the meat you could ever want, and probably 4 drinks each. For a vacation of 2 full weeks, eating, drinking, shopping, staying at a 5 star hotel you could do it with $4k. Does that sound too expensive?

Other funny things boracheira is a place where they fix tires, found that funny. And they have a town named Pinga, I could not believe that. LOL

Oh AZB forgot visa for gringos, $75 USD by mail can't get into the country without one. Doesn't take long, I mailed mine to Miami and got it back w/2 weeks. But as fast as you want to get there, you might not make it unless you got to an embassy, in that case, $65. No such thing as any airport tax like you got in DR.

Sounds good to me but I see that I don't have time to wait around for visa process :( Reminds me of the russian visa, I had to wait a month after sending in pictures and 50 bucks. Brazillian should let us in for free or allow us to buy a tourist visas at the airport if they want the green bills.
Anyway, it seems like you had a great time there. Maybe I will go there on my next trip. I think we have a brazillian embassy here in santo domingo.

Theresa,

you make me curious Brazil was always in the back of my mind.
The only reason I havn't done it is the language. I finally manage very basic Spanish and don't have the energy to go for Portuguese as well.

May be some day when the police has given Sosua
the final blow I'll go there.

Thanks for the report and welcome back.
X.

theresa: I, too, was most impressed with your report. I truly think that the comparisons are pretty much in line with what I would expect. You would probably get the same treatment if you went to Muscle Beach near LA... Brazilians have a savoir faire that does not exist here. But, then again, they are a monster size country...it is just that most Americans or other people from North America don't recognize it. After all, they are so far South.
Our friend DD has family down there and they tell of a wonderful place.
And, I recently heard that it is considered somewhat uncouth to be grossly overweight. A sort of 'national consciousness" that Americans can certainly use...Hell, I could use it, myself...

Vicariously enjoyed that trip...

I got my visa to Brazil in 1 day. You can hire a service to expidite it.

Most of what Theresa says is true, except the action is over on the CopaCabana side. I haven't been back since Jan, bit prior I had been spending 10 days every two months for the past few years down i Rio.

In January, the I was getting R$2.65=US$1, and a beer on the beach costs R$2, in the disco, R$2.5.

Copacabana is the places to be. Plenty of topless Brazilian girls.

Theresa, thanks for the report. I've been flying and laying over inthe DR since 1993, just love the place. I'm on new equipment now and flying to Sao Paulo and just love it! The language is a new challenge, but definately worth it. The city is BIG, I mean REALLY BIG....like flying ove the city for twenty minutes before you egt to the airport. BIG!

The food is outstanding, the beer almost as good as Presidente, and the women are beautiful and friendly. The $ goes very, very far there, almost makes the DR seem expensive (everything less than half the price in Brazil.)

Definately worth the visit if you can swing it.....
