Don't mean to sound stupid, but is that name for real, or just an inside political joke I missed? It's hard to tell around here sometimes!

I had some Dominican stomach virus with 6 arms and 18 legs jump on me Tuesday and I am just getting it back together today. Left me with a migraine too. I know I am still not recovered. I have an unopened bottle of champagne in the fridge and just looking at it still makes me nauseaus!

Thanks for the Info ...

Sounds exactly like what hit me. Guess I got off lucky with just a couple of really miserable days. That happened to me at the same time we went four days without power from Ede Norte and my generator went out in the middle of all that so I didn't even have the comfort of a fan for the worst night.

I hope you get to feeling better and can enjoy the rest of the vacation. I know I sure didn't feel like doing anything more than writhing on the bed at the time. Felt like somebody'd beat me up with a baseball bat.

Take care!

No Strikes, No demos, no problems at all up here in Puertom Plata. A lot of people going round with unhappy faces true, but other than that (& quieter shops & stores due to lack of money around) it is pretty much Life as Normal!! - Grahame.

It seems like someone is passing germs...

What is going on? My sister has been ill for two weeks. Hot all the time, hungry all the time and then nautius when she eats, painful migraines, hacking cough, sleep is all out of the normal (went to bed at 5 pm on Wednesday, woke up at 3pm on Thursday, went to bed at 2am on Friday... I wonder what time she will wake up today?) I have managed to get rid of the fevers, migraines and cough with penicillin and ibuprofen but the nausea and sleeping problems are still there. She refuses to see a doctor... well actually she says "you find me an american doctor and I will go", I do not know what to do....

Boy if that was going on with me for two weeks, I'd definitely want some medical help. I've used Clinica Gil y Garcia in Sosua for Alba and I over the last few years and have had good experiences. Also there's a very good medical clinic in Cabarete that a lot of ex-pats here use.

Xandu... that is what I say.... I am just thanking my lucky stars I have not caught it... I have been staying ad far away from her as possible and that is hard in this flat. I think I might try to whisk her into Cabarete within the next few days and hopefully get her to go into the clinic, I have seen it before and I am sure that would be sufficient... Does anyone know the hours of a doctor on staff??? (Last time I was there it was late and closed)

Flu bug:(

This explains a lot.... I just got back from DR on Wednesday morn. and by Thursday I thought that I was going to die! I have never in my life thrown up so much and been so sore! So far it is only 2 days and counting for me, this is the first I have been out of bed and lost 15 pounds. Hopefully it goes away soon. All I can say to the others that have it is get your fluids in even if you have to force it, you need your electrolytes (gaterade or pedialyte are good choices) the last thing that you need is to be dehydrated and then let them try to find a vein to rehydrate you! I hope your all feeling better soon! Stephanie (RN)

Yes, there has been a flu bug going around. Seems to be a tough one.

But "rombe hueso" (break bone" is another matter. That is the name often given dengue fever because pain in the joints and bones is one of the identifying symptoms. Erickxson, your symptoms sound more like dengue fever than gripe.

"Dengue has a short incubation period - often days, usually less than a week. The signs and symptoms of dengue include a sudden, rapidly climbing fever, a severe headache, nausea & vomiting, loss of appetite, rash and deep muscle and joint pains. The disease is nicknamed 'breakbone fever' for these last two symptoms. The rash usually shows up 3-4 days after the start of the symptoms and begins on the torso, spreading out to the face, arms and legs."

ServiMed in Cabarete is what I recommend. When I go, I see Dr. Gideon Plaut, a German doctor who has been living and practicing there for many years. He is an excellent doctor and should meet your sister's expectations. He is on duty from 2 to 5 or 6, Monday-Friday. Call the office to check on his schedule to be sure: 571-0964.

For anything related to the respiratory system, I can give you the name of an outstanding specialist at Centro Medico Bournigal in Puerto Plata. I would put her up against anyone anywhere. But from what you have said, it appears your sister wouldn't be interested.

When you first mentioned rompe huesos, just like Ken said, I thought of Dengue....that is another common name used in places where dengue is present.....

Hope you recover very soon....

Alba just got back and she says that she calls Dengue "Dengue" and that for her anyway "Rompe Huesos" is a totally different thing. I think that hit her a few weeks ago. She was out of town but what she described was pretty much what I felt and Erickxson described.

So anybody know what "Rompe Huesos" really is if not Dengue?

Preventing for this stomach virus

Does anyone know of something we can take ahead of time (Gamma Globulin?) to help reduce the risk for this stomach virus. I'm arriving in two weeks and you guys are scaring me.

Really hope everyone feels better soon!
