A person who suffers from the coealic disease can not eat anything containing gluten, which is in wheat, rye and ordinary produced barley products.
In most countries large stores or helthfood stores sell products which is prepared without gluten (ex flour, pasta,...)
Does anyone know if it is possible to buy food made without gluten anywhere in DR??

The Dominican diet has very little grains in it. People mostly eat rice, beans and starchy tubers. Don't know if that helps you.

In Santo Domingo there is a large shop on C/ Fantino Falco in Naco, between Tiradentes and Lope de Vega, near the Body Shop Gym, in the same shopping centre as Bagels & More. It sells a very good range of specialist products for different diets inc diabetic, food allergies etc. It definitely stocks gluten-free pasta. The products are mostly imported and quite expensive.

Sorry I can't remember the name of the shop, but it should be easy to find with the directions I have provided.

Good luck!

Spelt flour is virtually gluten free.I used to make and sell spelt bread in USA. It isn't quite as light as bread with gluten but it had a great flavor. There is also spelt pasta.
I don't know where to get that stuff here but I know a great supplier in USA and they grind the flour themselves.
This company does UPS orders but I'm sure its expensive and not sure the regulations on sending foods from one country to another. frankferd farms foods
This is their website. Theyer great people. I worked at this place for many years.

My wife is gluten intolerant. As you know, you have to be exceedingly careful with what you ingest. What this means is only going to restaurants and having dishes that are proven to be gluten-free.

We do not live in the DR, but we eat a primarily Dominican diet. Many Dominican dishes do not contain gluten.

One word of caution is of course the flavorings and spices that are added to these dishes: seasoning packets, those little seasoning cubes....powdered spices...etc....

We always use fresh ingredients. On a few occassions we have ingested food with Goya seasoning packets....and that did not seem to be a problem.

BUT.....every Coeliac is different..some have nasty reactions....others don't....so its not always easy to know if you have eaten glutten....as you know, it only takes a small portion of gluten to injure the lining of your intestines for a long time...

With that in mind you have to use extreme caution when eating controversial foods like oats and spelt.

Thank you:)

Tahnks a lot for your responses! I was diagnosed after deciding to stay in DR for about half a year, and I am not going to let this stop my plans. But I realize that it will have to take some more planning.
I was especially happy to hear that there ARE shops selling several gluten free products, that is a lot easyer than bringing things from home. And at least I can always survive on rice, beans and vegetables.
Again, -thank you all, and any other info (like if there are more than one shop) will be greatly appreciated!

I did not find the shop....

I have arrived DR, live on the north coast, and are having a hard time finding special food that I can eat. This must be the only country in the world where rice cakes is not sold anywhere....!! I was in Santo Domingo for a weekend and I looked for the shop mentioned above, but did not find it. Does anybody have a name of a shop that sell glutenfree products??
It would be grately appreciated!

Rice cakes are available usually at health food shops but also in the health food aisle at Carrefour - although I admit I have also had problems finding them lately. Santiveri is the brand name of the ones sold here.

The shop does exist, I just went and checked. It is called "Calorie Fat Free", in Plaza Criscar, C. Fantino Falco, Naco, between Aves. Tiradentes and Lope de Vega. As I said the nearest landmarks are Bagels & More in the same Plaza, and the huge green and blue Body Shop Gym across the road.

Their phone number is 565 3053 and opening times are 9am to 8pm.

Better luck next time!

Thanks! I did see that shop, but I didn't see any glutenfree products there, only fat free. So I thought it was another place.

I live in Cabarete. Is there a health food shop in Puerto Plata that might store ricecakes? I know the big supermercado in Sosua don't have them.

An update in case anyone gets this on an archive search:

The shop I mention in the above posts, Calorie Fat Free, is about to close down (Jan 04). Another casualty of the exchange rate crisis...

Chiri: That was most kind of you...

I can imagine some poor soul making a pilgrimage to that place, only to find it all shuttered up!

Man am I glad I don't have these digestive problems!....But I could survive on rice and beans..and veggies...and fruits...and good meats like chivo[/]....
