10 Days in the Dominican Republic

Myself, my wife and my three year old son will be traveling to the Dominican Republic for 10 days in April. We are hoping to travel to two separate locations in the country, staying at each for 5 days. We we would like to stay in a small cottage or villa very close to a beautiful and quiet beach, with proximity to a small town.

After some research, the locations that we would like to visit are Punta Rucia on the north coast, and somewhere in Samana (Las Galeras or Las Terrenas). Is it feasible (and does it make sense) to fly into Puerto Plata, drive up to Punta Rucia and stay for five days, and then transfer to Samana for another five days - or is this too hectic and too difficult for a 10 day trip (especially with a three year old child)?

Any other suggestions for a 10 day trip to beautiful quiet beaches would also be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your help!

Pick one. Why go to two boring places and hassle yourself inbetween? Both are beautiful and boring. Also about 4 hours apart by taxi. Why put the 3 year old through this when you can be just as bored in either place?

Samana is a possibility. Las Galeras is on the south coast of the Samana Peninsula and Las Terrenas is on the north coast. Two very different locations with beautiful beaches. Finding a small cottage or villa at either location likely a problem, however. More probable are small hotels. Las Terrenas has a commercial district, though tourist oriented. The city of Samana is the town that serves Las Galeras.

With a 3-year-old, I presume you are limited as far as your activities are concerned. Don't imagine much not life is possible. More of this in Las Terrenas than in Las Galeras.

Cottages?

When it comes to Las Terrenas:
There are a lot of bungalows (caba?as) or apartments for rent at or near the Punta Bonita beach. They are self-contained facilities and some of them have a towel/ linen service.
I wouldn?t call them cottages ...
There are also small hotels that do B&B.

One big advantage to Playa Bonita with small kids is there is a small cove where the wave action is very calm and you can go out a fair distance before it gets anywhere near deep (providing the tide is right). This cove is perfect for small kids.

I always like Punta Ruc?a, but that is because

I have been there since 1963....okay, okay... First off, think of landing in Santiago, it's closer to both places.

There is a nice little hotel there (Punta Ruc?a) that rents rooms that are big enough for you, wife and child. As for boring, well it depends. there is night life, but it is sort of "native" ..

Now, since i raised my brood on that shore, I can say one thing for sure: You can leave them alone and they won't get hurt!...they may end up looking like little pieces of charcoal, but they will love that beach.

And five days of quiet should be enough. there is good eating there, and you will be taking your own water in gallon jugs for drinking. Bug spray and great sun block is needed.

Yes, it is a long drive back to Saman?, but places like Luperon, Maimon, Cofres?, R?o San Juan, Cabrera and Nagua are closer. So is Monte Cristi, just 45 minutes away. Has some great beaches, cheap hotels...

It sounds like a nice adventure. And three year olds tend to go to sleep anyway..

Let me know if I may be of help...

HB

PS: I expect to be there the 16, 17,&18th, and probably before that a bit.

Go to Las Terrenas

I agree with some other folks, why the hassle of going to different places when you have found a great place to stay? I have been to Las Terrenas many times, it is wonderful, stay outside of town, because at night the disco's pump up their volume and you will not hear the waves of the ocean or russtle palm trees until 5 AM. I stayed at Playa Colibri, and everyone agrees with me that this is the best place just outside of the town. They have a big pool for you and your wife and a small whirl pool for your kid, they even have a baby sitter if you want, so you can go dancing with your wife (if you like dancing of course). The kitchen is fully equiped, so you can prepare snacks, or meals yourself. but there is also a great restaurant in front of the hotel and they will bring the food up to your room if you wish. The people that run the place are very friendly and laid-back, they will make sure you have a great and relaxing time. Enjoy your trip.
the website of the hotel is playacolibri.com check it out, in real life it's even nicer!

Saman? Maps

I have yet to find a map of Saman? which depicts reality.
For example:
Cos?n is NOT on the Sanchez - Las Terrenas road.
The place named Cos?n seems to be Los Puentes.

Las Terrenas!!!

The best place to go. I was there with my 2 kids in early March, just beautiful. I stayed at Colibri and it was perfect. Very safe, the people were nice, the appartements incredible. The beach is nice and calm at some areas like someone posted. The food is excellent almost everywhere and there is a lot of choices. We rented 4-wheelers there, which is a big trend, and got to visit the area. Sure beats the all inclusive vacation!!!! HAVE FUN!
