I am having no luck finding a fun ride for the week we will spend in DR. Last year we went with a Suzuki and it was OK, but not topless! We venture the whole week and want take in the beauty of the island and environment 'open air'. Can anyone give me some help. None of the big name car renters have convertible/jeep options. Thanks, Jo D. in SC

And here is one reason why they are scarce...

The scenario:

There you are tooteling down the road and you see this beautiful little beach. Oh, you just gotta stop and go for a swim.

Sooo.....

You put the top up, lock the vehicle and down to this precious little private beach all to yourselves.. After an hour of cavorting, you return to your vehicle, only to find it has been totally denuded of radio, all of whatever you left in the vehicle and maybe even the seats. All you need to do this is a good sharp machete and everyone has one of those laying around.

Therefore, don't be silly. Get a closed vehicle with a/c.... And count the convertibles you see here. I'll make book you don't see a dozen.

HB

O(h I can show you some beautiful convertibles but they are watched by armed guards when parked anywhere. Those Blaupunkts are priceless.

And the lesson being that if you do decide to go for the ragtop, make sure you keep it under watch at all times.

Having owned a jeep for over 10 years (not anymore now) best thing to do is never put the top up. Nobody ever goes in it when its open, I used to hide briefcases and stuff under newspaper on the floor. Nothing ever got stolen. (Obviously I would not leave anything of real value like that)

Only time something ever gets taken when you lock the top up and people take a knife or something and slash it open and then steal CDs or whatever they can find.

Thanks for the convertible feedback. Yes, I have been 'stripped' of the contents in other destinations. We carry nothing these days and either drive or park it at the hotel. We do like the casinos and to come and go at our leisure, so a car is a must. I'm a bit daunted by the scenerio presented and will weigh the real value of taking the chance in a convertible. I haven't found one to rent anyway :( On my way to DR on Friday and can't wait!!
