This is just a thought, so dont blast me for it.
Since so many people ( me included) want to move and live in the Dominican Republic, why dont several of us get our finances together and form a business relationship. If we all chipped in, say 10,000 USD and put it in an escrow type account or something similar where no one person could access it without the approval of all, we would have a more powerful position from which to operate. I plan to move there in the next 2 years one way or another. I have some thoughts on good businesses and I am sure others do as well. WELL???

Let's combine

I do not know how old you are or how much experience in business you have. Partnerships very rarely work. Generally they are formed because of lack of capital and the two or more think that combining the capital increases the chance of success, it doesn't. What it does, is increase the chance of friction because now there are lots of people wanting to make decisions and share what little profits there maybe at the start. Do you know what a camel is? You do or You don't? Well the answer is a camel is a horse designed by a committee and that's generally what you get from a partnership. The best and only partnership that really will work is a good marriage- We have this and we have decided to share our wealth and build a good retirement business in the DR. , and rest assured after discussions, I'll be making the final decisions at my wife's request.

OK, I get the drift. I just thought forming a business relationship with others would reduce the risk for initial investment since we would be contributing a small amount. the money could be used for business or for buying an apartment building and forming a sort of co-op for a cheap place to live. Silly me...

There are no co ops in this country!

I suggest if you want serious detailed answers, your present a serious detailed idea or proposal.

Many of us on this board have our own businesses either in the the DR or outside. We are here to help... help us make it easy to answer.

Interesting. My son and three friends are in the process of forming a co-op sharing resources for a similar venture. They are looking at some land to buy and then build themselves. (They have experienced builders and carpenters and so on in the group)

Yes. I found the decisionary process between them quite motivating. This is not a short term undertaking as they all still have to earn their Dollar incomes in the US. So, we will probably do whatever managing is required on this side, until one of the group, or the group, finds that they are ready to move here full time. It has been a nice thing to watch from the sidelines.

So they are building apartments in DR? Where?

Perhaps I do not know what you mean by a co op. What I am talking about is a co-operative venture similar to that suggested in the topic of this post.... I am not talking about apartments. I am talking about a group of people putting their finances together in order to be able to afford a bigger piece of land than what they could afford inidividually, managing the land co-operatively, and building residences for themselves on that land... Clear now?

I need a bunch of guys with limited capital, no experience and to be hampered in what I do until I get the approval from all. Yeah this works. I would sooner wish I had a case of herpes. That would be as much fun as a barrel of dead monkeys. Where do you people dream this stuff up from? Get a job or something because you have way too much time on your hands.

The collective concept you describe is called socialism and as a rule, it doesn't work.

Yeah! I have doubts as well, but different strokes for different folks. That is why I find their planning process interesting. But you are jumping to conclusions with saying 'no experience' and 'dreaming stuff up' and 'way to much time on your hands'. The people that I'm talking about have been living collectively sharing resources for 5 years or so, up in Maine... For them, it is not an experiment any longer. Limited capital also is kinda a stretch in this case. I think this group has sufficient capital to do what they want to do - we're not talking 'stupid' here, but we are talking different.

A collective style of living works well for some people. What's wrong with wanting to build your own 'gated community'? And were you never a hippy in the 60's, or were you too square for that communal living stuff :)

I would not go this far - this collective concept is also described as co-operative living and it does work for certain people - if one likes this lifestyle.

Perhaps there is one thing that the original poster BILLS said that is absolutely on the mark : "why don't several of us get our finances together and form a business relationship - stuff cut out - we would have a more powerful position from which to operate".

I think this is really how capitalism works - socialism clearly does not work this way, although it is supposed to.

I for one do not think the original idea is dumb. The secret is in how the original idea is carried out.

Oh what wonderful days those were. Flower children, make love not war, no bras, smoking dope, anyone over 30 should die. You know it started as a small movment. May be, just may be, it could all be revived in the Dominican Republic.

Count me in if it happens.
